A new sonar or radar from bouncing light particles.
No, not like a flashlight and a pair of eyes... More for observing distant space.

Electromagnetic radiation ("light") is already used to observe space, however due to the limitation of the speed of light, it's not really practical to rely on light which originates on Earth. It would take 8.5 years to take measurements from the nearest star to earth other than our sun, 50 millenia from the centre of our galaxy, and about 5 million years from the nearest Galaxy, Andromeda, which is ~2.5 Mly away.
