Iron Ore Pirates, how unrealistic.

"Pirates hijacked a Turkish ship with 20 crew off the coast of Somalia but at least six other ships have fended off pirate attacks in the past two days...The Yasa Neslihan was carrying iron ore from Canada to China..."

People can laugh about the pirate attacks, but many of the people of Somalia see them as justified. For years, thousands of boats from foreign lands have dumped thousands of tons of toxic materials in the waters off the coast of Somalia, and after the tsunami that devastated Indonesia reached the coast of Somalia, many of those chemicals and hazardous materials were washed up on the shore.

Now many pirates are attacking boats for doing these horrible acts for revenge. Just thought i'd like to share that comment.

This is a sad situation Idrive... but I fail to see how pirates attacking passing ships will do anything to improve the situation. Even if the UN tried to come and do something to clean up the mess, they would be subject to these attacks as well. Then they would need to bring in an army to protect themselves and... well you write the rest of the story.

Actually that is true, except that their "revenge" tactics died out a long time ago and now they do it for profit. They are no longer the innocent bystanders who wanted to protect their borders, they are now just another criminal organization.

Avoid assuming that all of the pirates do the acts for profits. Just as you and I have different intentions, so do all of the pirates. Yes, many do these acts for profit, but many do these acts for money because they don't have anything else to do to make a living.

I'm not saying the acts are justified, i'm saying this is the reason that many locals are in support of these pirate acts.

If the international community actually gave three s--ts and did something to clean up the toxic waste then this problem would largely disappear.

I believe that if the international community did something when this first became a problem, then yes, it would disappear. I think it is too late for that idea though, as they have seen the profit that can be made from doing this.


I do believe that I read somewhere that there are still those that still do it to protect their water from the contamination, but the news and media are not interested in detailing that, the ratings come from reporting the "bad" pirates, the ones who are in it for profit.

My brain says that there is no such thing as 'good' or 'bad' pirate. Their intentions might be more nobel then anothers but still it is a 'bad' thing to be a pirate.

I think that pirate may be the wrong word to describe those who are not in it for the profit. I used it because that is the term that they are all lumped in to, good or bad intentions alike.

Maniqueistic but fact ain't it? Well, pirates do it for the money not the fun. Also, money which is not going to be distribuited to the poor nor would make them less poor if they had it.

Robin Hood, Jack Sparrow...? Oh, my... get real

In Beagle's 'The Last Unicorn' there's a group of bandits living in a forest. What they want is to become heroes as legendary Robin Hood was. What they actually do, is stealing from poor (as they are the only one who can't defend against them) and giving to rich (as the rich could pay to hire an army to get rid of the bandits in no time, if they only wished so).
Ideals are pretty little things, but this is reality, with real problems and real relations...
