If you haven't tried.
Try

Very reminiscent of Dungeon Keeper (both in game play and humour). But with Dwarves. In a pseudo-rogue stylie.
I advise you to download some tilesets, unless you're a fan of ASCII based games (Of which I am, but not of this complexity).

I don't want to download this, and I don't think I understand. What exactly is dwarf fortress. I want to know before I download and try to play.

Doesn't Dungeon Keeper say eneough?
If not, then go play Dungeon Keeper (and the original theme park whilst you're at it) and get away from me, heathen!
Dwarf Fortress premis:
You lead a bunch of dwarves
You mine into a mountain
You turn that mine into a home and fortress
You build stuff
Lots of stuff
Large dining rooms, massive kitchens, farms, workshops producing trinkets for trade and essential items
More dwarves come
You try to survive all seasons
You try to survive the wild animals
Dwarves keep coming
You build more stuff. Impressive clothing, armour and weapons for an army, magnificent statues lining your halls.
You make the fortress larger to home you hundreds of dwarves
You try to survive sieges
You try to survive molten lava and related nasty beings
You fail at some point
You start again...
All rendered in ASCII!

I use a laptop, and as such my + and - keys aren't recognized, and I can't play.

I am playing it on a laptop. You have to press the Fn key and whatever the plus and minus is (For me it is ; and p, you should see it written on the keys). I am sure there is a way to change the keymap as well.
I would also say there are a few elements from 'The sims' as well. Your dwarfs are individuals with detailed likes and preferences (as an example I have one that likes cats for their aloofness).

Fn key? I'm not sure I follow.

The "function" key. Most laptops are not big enough to incorporate a full keyboard. To make up for that, many laptops have a special key that turns some of the other keys into a num pad, and any other keys that might be missing.

Just stayed up all night playing this silly game... how on earth do you get farm mud?
Nevermind... slept and understand.

Ah ok, I see now. I was trying to use my + and - keys in the top row, but I see the fn now. I think I'll give it another try, I already generated a world after all.

If you hit Esc while in the game you can go to 'Key Bindings' to change the +/- to something easier.
I would also have a good play of Adventure mode while you are there. It is quite mindless but good fun.

Im actually working on a huge mod pack adding many animals to the game. More friendly ones like skunk rabbits etc etc.

Sounds cool.
Do you know if other animals fight one another?

Working on multiple playable races in fortress mode all will have proffesion specific graphics. Including: Ettin Minotaur Giant Goblin Kobold and Cyclops. I am looking for someone who could help me create the creature definitions a guide to modding is on the DF wikis.

I was wondering if anybody could just post a list of all the keys, its very hard to figure out to start what the hell I'm doing. I've tried reading the guides on the wiki, but I'm either too tired or too stupid.
