What Major is better?

Postby Sparkle » Thu Jan 11, 2007 7:14 pm

I can not make up my mind about what I should major in for my bachelors degree. I want to pursue a degree that opens the door for great job opportunities, but I hear alot of different things about which position has better paying/advancing jobs.

I'm studying software design (which is mostly programming) and it's bloody hard, even though I've been some sort of a hobbyist even before I started studying it. Could you tell more about that Security option?

Well, I will have my AS in Computer Networking Technology and wanted a BS to kinda follow up. I originally wanted to get a Programming degree, but they did not offer it any more and CNT was the only degree that offered at least one programming class.

CNT also requires several security classes. Basically teaching you how to secure computers, servers, networks, and hardware. This is something I think is quite useful, but I still have a passion for programming. Hell, if I get really good at programming I can write my own security program.

So anyways...I THINK there is a huge demand for both and security is greatly needed, but I love programming and know that it is needed too. Hell, I am just all mixed up. I might end up doing both, but still...I am confused about which to do first.

Security might help in programming later.. if you do both. I'd say go with what you love though, if you only do one.

As far as I was aware, whilst people used to heavily clamour for IT specialists, they are now swamped...

Or become a starving theorist. Theoretical computer science is interesting stuff.

But to answer the question, it probably depends on the college. The content of a degree in "security" or "programming" varies a great deal depending on where you get it.

lol I think I'll have to pass on that one. :P When I was in the navy I had to wear a blue hard hat and I hated it.

Sho, it is funny you mention that because the school I want to go to only has Security, but the other school is a good school too. I'll take your advice and look more into both just in case.

Personally, I'd go for security, but that is my own bias and not based on job market, etc. I'm still trying to get the military to send me to their network security school. :(

Either way, both are much needed fields. I'll second that you should do what you enjoy most.

For those who are interested...

Thank you for all your suggestions. I took most of your advice and I am now enrolled into Kaplan University and I am getting a BSIT in Programming. It has me quite busy, but I will still drop in from time to time. You can also catch me in the game or in one of the Werewolf/Mafia/Zombie games.

I love interactive gaming. :D

I think you should study Programming, personally, because the internet, and the computer companies and the like are one of the most rapidly growing industries...

In other countries. My uncle's company went from several hundred employees to less than 75 over the past several years.

Seconded. Although it's off-topic.
