I actually have no idea what American rye bread tastes like. My family makes our own salted salmon (I'm Russian, I just happen to be living in America/Canada), and the rye bread we bought was always from specialty stores.

Love can fade at any moment... An advice, (and I'm not used to give any) young people, or old married: -never- take love for granted.

My thought today is a verse from "No Leaf Clover", by Metallica:

"Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, it's just a freight train coming your way"

They really have that stuff available over there? Usually if I describe raw salted salmon on a sandwich to non-Finns, people are all "eww!" I've also heard that American rye bread is much milder and lighter in color than the Nordic variety.

Isn't that lox? I looove lox and have been craving it for a long time. It's pretty expensive and I've recently considered attempting to make it myself sometime.

edit: I guess lox would differ from salted salmon since lox is also cold smoked. It's still basically raw and salt cured though. Yummy.

We have Wal-Mart and other giant supermarket chains that import things from everywhere, Americanise it, and stock it on their shelves for the general public to purchase and consume.

Not sure if I'd like the sugar part of the brine, but I'd definitely give it a try!

Oh, and I meant to add before... Ceviche is wonderful! I started making it this spring and wish I'd attempted it 9 years ago - it's really easy.

Maybe not, but I'm pretty sensitive to sweet flavors. I don't even eat stuff like cake or brownies anymore because they're too sweet; if I do, I scrape all the icing off.

Well firstly, they butcher the spellings of words. I'm one of those crazy American maniacs who writes 'colour' instead of 'color' because I detest the 'proper American-English spelling'. I don't care who marks me wrong for it on papers.

And basically they butcher it into something they think we Americans will be able to stomach mentally, but they retain enough of the original ingredients or style to keep the name of the country in front of the food. I don't know the specifics of it, though.

I can't stand American cake/brownies/baked goods because they're all too sweet (especially the icing), but I find the cured salmon to be delicious and not sweet in the slightest, so I think you'd enjoy it. :)

That's the beauty of Canada. They spell everything the way I do. "Practise" vs "practice," "colour vs. color"... It's a comfortable medium between British- and American-English.
