I always thought coke was Coca Cola. Or a type of processed coal.

Except in the southern US, where, if you ask for a coke, they'll ask you what kind of coke you want because, to them, all soda is coke.

A: "Can I have a coke, please?"
B: "What kind of coke do you want?"
A: "Sprite."

Wait a mi-newt here! Those you call stereotypes? Well then uh... Dudel fits into said stereotypes as well, minus the trailer and odd accent. However Y'all is common with me, as you've seen.

By the way...

Soda is equal to soda. Soda IS NOT equal to pop or coke. Coke, however, is equal to soda.

Its "a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not a square" kind of situation.

Soda is coke, or soda is soda. Coke is always soda, but it can be used to refer to its generic equivalents or pepsi equivalents--everything is in terms of coke.
Pop is something a bubble does.

Bad example, sprite -is- a coke product. Try pepsi next time :D

When i went to Georgia I asked for a coke. They asked me what kind of coke I'd like. So in the south coke is their word for a carbonated sugary beverage.
