Well, I saw my first PG-13 movie when I was 8, and it was Practical Magic. I don't think that helped any. LOL

Except for the end of the Ring getting to me scary movies haven't really "scared" me since I seen Creepshow 2 when I was like 7 and had nightmares about the black stuff from the pond oozing over my bed for 2 months...since then it really takes alot for anything to get to me, just blood and guts won't do it, I prefer horror movies with a psycological twist like in the Ring they have you thinking the movie is basically over and then that girl comes back.

There's a huge difference between movies that are scary and those that are simply shocking/gruesome.

Then there are gems like Requiem For A Dream, which pretty much just rule.

I suspected as much about the Hidalgo Movie: Some ad-wizard wanted to capitalize on the zeitgiest rife with American involvement in the Middle East. So he came up with a supossedly true story to satiate a desire for some kind of romantic connection to the Middle East. Even the legend surrounding Lawrence of Arabia was manufactured by an American ad-wizard.

This movie may have some cinematic merit, but I doubt it will compare to Lawrence of Arabia. Just as The Last Samurai was good: but it pales in comparison to the Seven Samurai.

Although, to be accurate, I must question your sources too about the authenticity of the Hidalgo story. From what you say, it is practically a complete fabrication, whereas Lawrence of Arabia wasn't by comparison.

The Last Samurai is more like Lawrence of Arabia than The Seven Samurai (The Seven Samurai was more about class conflict) or Hidalgo, though. It's sort of an Imperialist's guilt complex thing, like Lawrence of Arabia; whereas Hidalgo seems to be more about the American in Arabia beating everyone and saving the day at the same time: kind of the antithesis.

Hidalgo, Lawerence of Arabia, and Seven Samurai all have a political-propagandized objective. The only difference is Hidalgo shows no courage, because it is easy to tote what people want to believe, while it is harder to try to reckon those beliefs with something closer to reality (ie Imperialist blunders by Britain in Arabia, and unsrcrupulous Arms deals in Asia by America)

But when they are out just to make money, what the hell do they care, right?

I recommend watching all of them and comparing them with eachother.... I like The Seven Samurai and Lawerence of Arabia the best... who knows with Hidalgo.
