I think the critical distinction is whether the "pointless" post is interfering with other forum users. Silly forum games and pointless threads (e.g. *is bored*) are fine because the chatty fun is contained.
But when people make offtopic or contentless posts in threads that are actually trying to get some work done (Suggestions, Moderation Requests, Capital Rules Breaches, and some General Disussions threads), it's disruptive. Usually the thread goes off on a tangent for a few posts to answer or dismiss the offtopic post. All too often the topic completely loses sight of its goal and dies half-completed.
No matter what happens, the people who were talking in the affected thread feel disrespected. They had made reasoned arguments, they were waiting for others to respond, and then someone drops a figurative whoopee cushion in the discussion. Not to be a self-important, PMS-ing hypocrite, but some of us like to keep our work and our playtime in different rooms. Please respect that.

Thank you Sho, I agree whole heartedly with this. The recent level of chatter in the Support and Suggestion forums has been IMHO very disruptive and I'd personally like to see it stop . It's got to the ridiculous stage where people are now using the Moderation Request forum to apologise for unecessary posting. The Suggestions Forum by its very nature can take a little off track chatter as original ideas are developed but General Support, Capital Rules Breaches and Moderation Requests should really only be used for the purposes they are designed for.

I've got to admit that I've simply ignored the suggestions forum for some time now. There's never anything new there, and the discussion tends to eventually just follow the lines that Sho just described.

Been there, done that Richard

No one learns. And, even if they do, there are waves of new users to continue to ignore the topics right at the very top of the forum telling them exactly how not to piss people off.
Whoever you vote for.

Aww, fuck this. I'm out. I won't post on anything besides the games anymore. Peace!

Congradulations, you're officially an oldbie.

Next step is quitting, and coming back.

I think this whole post count stuff is kind of ridiculous - there are more and more totally pointless posts, just to say something.

But my goodness, my ranking is seriously increasing, and I just passed the 3000 posts! (Did a lot of posts to revive the ProgD forum today.) So I can't say much, I suppose. 3000 - that's shocking :) ...

But can people please posts fewer posts that are either entirely off-topic, or just one-liners that don't add a single thing to the discussion?

You heard the man, people.

@Jos: It ought to be possible to keep post counts from displaying entirely.

That wont stop it though some people will just want to chatter away, I would suggest a secondary less serious forum but then CRB would prob become a serious issue,

I will try to stay in the right forums..

We already have the less important non-cantr-related and general discussion vs the more formal rule breaches and suggestions etc. forums.
