In America, college and university are interchangeable. The difference is that Universities have post graduate study.

oh, I see.

Well here, both offer higher education, but universities offer degrees normally, and colleges offer diplomas and vocational qualifications, maybe a few beginners degrees.

sixth form colleges are part of a school and generally only do A levels (academic qualifications) but can outsource to local colleges for vocational course if required

Um...you can go as far as a Bachelor's in some colleges (well at my college you can) and some others even offer Master's...

Univesity's I believe are the only ones to offer Doctorines...

Really? I wasn't aware that colleges offered Masters degrees... I thought only BA's or BS's.

I thought so too until my Instuctor told us he got one of his Masters from a college.

Then again it shouldn't suprise anyone since nowadays they make it to where you can get a Masters at home on the computer. :P

Damn, I wish it was that easy in high school.

University generally refers to size and the number of programs offered. Colleges tend to be smaller, but not necessarily better or worse.

To use a few local examples, Swarthmore College is the best liberal arts school in the country (and incredibly selective--they accept something like 8% of applicants), whereas Indiana University of Pennsylvania is just another state school.

@West: I'm perfectly aware that colleges can be academically superior to universities. I attend a liberal arts college that is in the same tier as Swarthmore. But you won't be able to get your Ph.D at Swarthmore college (nor your Masters as far as I know). Some colleges make for the best stepping stones to doctoral study.
