Well, you don't want to get hit with a paintball gun at high or max velocity. It breaks skin, though it only hurts for a second (like a bee sting), the paint from the ball stings and gets into the broken and hurts like hell. If it doesn't break skin then leaves a bruise or whelp for about a month. That and we usually use marbalized paintballs and that doesn't help much.
Though you should try it sometime. It's great fun. Though I would recommend you go to a paintball place where things are highly regulated and you can rent the gear. Paintball gear is expensive (especially if it is modified) as well as paintballs. CO2 is pretty cheap and you can get refills at any Army Navy Store.
