As in the one that JFKs father or what it grandfather was involved in. The families welath was made off of running illegal alcohol during prohibition. This area was a distribution point for thier network. Boat loads (literally on boats) of Canadian alcohol would come in to this area.

Considering Kennedy is Irish American then that would be the Irish Mafia not the American Mafia.

Well but when speaking internationally it would be American Mafia. Specifically Irish American Mafia. And Although ethic groups did tend to form large groups I do not belive that ever ethic groups illegal operations were aligned. Just as the "Russian Mafia" is not one group. American Mafia just means American organized crime.

Well the Irish and Italian Mafias worked together sometimes but they hated each other. In fact, my grandparents use to tell me stories about how they would get into big brawls and when the fight was over both sides would blame the Germans and then go to the German areas and beat up some Germans. Back then everything was divided ethnically. Today, Americans are too mixed up of different ethnic groups that it would be impossible fro any pure ethnic group to exist anymore.

I think it is funny when you tell a foreigner that you are 85% Irish, 10% Norweign, and 5% the rest of the stuff and they always ask how you can be part of any ethnic group. I just say it happens.

Even within those ethic groups the gangs were not necessarily aligned.

True, very true. But they were most likely to agree than they would with a ethnic group that was different.
