I am just saying that the only reason such a huge percentage listen to it is because it is popular

Having lots of people like something is pretty much the definition of popular. If a huge percentage of people didn't like it then it would not be popular. It's one of them chicken/egg things.

A few pointers here from a personal persepctive:

Rap (hip hop) music is not a music of a specific 'race'

People should not keep to music of their race because:
Music itself, and musical appreciation can not be delimited by race - possibly by nationality, certainly by culture - although I appreciate and enjoy music of many varied nationalities and cultures - and I think the suggestion to keep to 'music of their race' is both narrow minded and ignorant, if not also deeply arrogant.

As for teenage (white) girls all liking rap music:
1)There would be nothing wrong with that if it were true
2)It certainly isn't true, not here in the UK or in the US

the 'white chicks' and myself just like the music, and the culture, there's nothing wrong with that.

Neither is it peer pressure - give these 'teenage white chicks' some bloody respect - they don't take whatever MTV feeds them - MTV shows what it does because that's what they like, not vice versa. Give teenagers the respect they deserve - their much mjore capable of making decisions for themselves than you might realise.

Well, this may surprise you farmer, but I am actually 15 years old, and I know, at least at my school, 90-95% of the women listen to rap. That is a fact. Also, I am not rascist, come on. You have to realize that it is impossible for something to actually be liked by that many people. In our culture today (speaking for the US only) music is a pop culture thing than actual entertainment. This is probably not true of the majority of people, but for those who it is true, what I am trying to say is get a personality of your own!

But more seriously, this is the rap/hip hop era... just like it was the Rock era a few decades a go, and the Jazz Era in the Twenties, it's just how it works. It's a fad in a sense, and in a sense you are right. But, you did say some things that are borderline racist. But, and I hate to generalize, the majority of the kids my age that I know say the same things (and I am guilty of it a little bit).

Don’t be rediculous, Farmer. Flood upon flood of middle class white children are trying to be black. Don’t lie. They want afro American culture, because that’s whats cool. They want to be tough, they want to be “urban” and “ghetto” as they put it. They are trying to be black.

The problem is, the black they are trying to be does not exist. I was created by the big corporate men who run things these days, and is constantly perpetrated in popular culture.

And MTV DOES NOT run on viewer feedback. It’s them who tell people what to like, not people who tell them what they like. Sure, they play rock and pop and watered down shitty rap, yeah, they play all the genres. But what they are doing is giving you “A choice.”

“Here are the things you can like, kids. Take it or leave it.”

MTV and the like are not in any way a reflection of popular culture. Popular culture is a reflection of them.


Here, let me give you an example. Do you remember the oldschool hip hop group from California Niggers With Attitude? They were a huge, huge group. Immensely popular, sold millions upon millions of albums, even after having been boycotted by near every radio station in the country. No matter what people tried to do to suppress them, legally or otherwise, they kept it coming. Now, they were immensely popular, but, also, very controversial. They exposed in there songs things like the continued oppression of American blacks, the massive racism that was faced by black Americans, the rampant police corruption and racial profiling that existed at the time and still does today.

Now, anyone familiar with them will remember there hit song “Straight Outta Compton”. For this song, the group filmed a music video for television music broadcasters like Much Music. Guess what? Much Music refused to play it. It’s never been on it or any affiliate. Ever.

Sure, they throw in a bit of nudity from time to time, and they talk about issues like the ones above (of course, only just enough to look like they care, as charity is really fashionable.) but by the good lord god above, they sure as hell better not put anything that might upset the advertisers.


Wake up, Farmer. And take off those goddamn blinders.

It is incorrect to claim that something is true just because you can present a few examples of it from personal experience. Your environment is not necessarily representative of the entire field.

I'm not going to name names, but some of the arguements here are heavily flawed.

That being said, either post pictures of yourselves here or move to a different thread.
