I'm going to China this summer anyways... but not to teach English. Instead, I'm going to learn Chinese there. I participated in a competition about learning Chinese last year and it seems like my Chinese was so awful that the embassy decided that I really needed to improve it, so they awarded me a scholarship for a language course in Beijing
All expenses paid

What Chinese language? Mandarin (sp?) or Cantonese?
Also you should see Firefly. They use Chinese in Firefly.

Not really. Most of my body parts are bad. They can't do much with my lungs or my heart. And I'm pretty sure the rest of my organs wouldn't be that good. And they wouldn't want my blood either since there is some sort of problem with that too. It sometimes a wonder why I'm still alive.

Mandarin. Given the fact that the Chinese government enforces that Mandarin is taught everywhere in China, and Cantonese is just a dialect that isn't commonly taught outside its region and that is also much harder than Mandarin, it'd be foolish to learn Cantonese first

Would you care to enlighten me about that? Firefly hasn't yet made it to Germany, afaik, and I'm not sure it ever will. The market is over-saturated with American TV concepts. How do they use Chinese?

Anyways, who would want to kidnap me anyways. It's not like anyone that I know has the money to buy me back nor am I that useful.

They use Chinese to say certain words or phrases that would be censored on Americn television.
They use it with mixed English like instead of using sister they say mei mei.
There is a great website up that translates all of the Chinese phrases into English. This is the site http://fireflychinese.home.att.net/

That is so interesting! Thank you for telling me about it! I'll watch out to see whether or when Firefly airs in Germany.
Having had a look on some of the phrases translated on that webpage, I can see why they might be censored on American TV... in Germany things are generally not that strict, expletives usually aren't deleted, but they often edit out things related to Nazism. Not the documentaries I mean, but films where you'd be left with a positive or indifferent opinion of Nazism. And symbols in general. Swastikas are usually removed unless they're really important to the story. One episode of my favourite series wasn't aired at all over here.

I don't understand that. Why wouldn't they say "sister"? I don't think that's something that would be censored anywhere, except in "Brave New World".

Would that be the "Hitler in England" episode by Monty Python?
Never was aired in Holland too. Barley anywhere actually. I DL'd a version with Asian subtitles. Prolly Chinese.
And yeah, theyre pretty strict on Nazi symbols here too... But I don't think a movie would ever be editted for content...
Life is fun. Play naked with Psycho-Pixie.

They didn't just do it because it might be censored but the premise of the show is that it is 500 years into the future. Before Earth disappeared, only two superpowere remained in the world, the US and China. Somewhere down the line, China and the US joined togther to form one government. Then something happened to Earth, humans left and colonized space by terraforming whole planets so that people could live in them. There are two different types of planets, Core Planets and Border Planets. Core Planets are like huge cities with lots of technology and everything anyone could ever want. The Border Planets are like what you would consider the frontier. Pretty much settlers with maybe an axe, a shovel, a blanket, and if they're lucky a cow. But that is where they get the Chinese and English from, the last two remaining superpowers so their language dominated the rest the world.
