Compass? It has to be a good one. Most just spin when presented with not being held level due to rocking from even very small waves.

And when lost: You can find the direction by looking at Orion... very easy to find and visible nearly all night. Whenever I look up @ the sky, Orion is the first I see, and the constellation the 2nd.
