Something that didn't motivate me, but changed the way I think somewhat - I know it's cliché but the scene from American Beauty with the plastic bag, wouldn't have been so powerful without the stunning music, but that always stuck in my mind as something very special. I'm naming something very special after it as a sort of dedication.. to the simple beauty of life.

Another thing that motivates me.. unrealistic and lofty goals. I'm regularly told my dreams are unachievable and far too high, and yet I manage them, however slowly, one after the other. Maybe it's proving everyone wrong, or proving something to myself, who knows. Nothing beats that high, though. It's always believed that if you want something badly enough, you will achieve it.

I'm a romantic at heart so I tend to look to creative things for motivation.. art, photography, music, film. I also believe there is something to be had in the theory of repetitive music/drumming/tones aligning your brain with particular moods.

A simple one - Music.

If i'm struggling to motivate myself to complete something (Most of the time Uni assignments) I wack on something and it just focuses and drives me. Also depends on what type of assignment or work i need doing to what music I need.

How could I forget the most obvious ones?! Found both through The Flashbulb's music.. incredibly brilliant artist, and he releases his albums free on torrent sites. Fight the powah!

1. Carl Sagan

The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

If you like stars, I can't recommend listening to The Flashbulb's Carl Sagan tribute enough - Pale Blue Dot. Truly amazing stargazing music, and actually interesting ambient.

2. Waking Life (Movie, 2001)

Down through the centuries, the notion that life is wrapped in a dream has been a pervasive theme of philosophers and poets. So doesn't it make sense that death too would be wrapped in dream? That after death, your conscious life would continue in what might be called a dream body? It would be the same dream body you experience in your everyday dream life. Except that in the post-mortal state, you could never again wake up, Never again return to your physical body.

again.. quoted beautifully in a Flashbulb song, I'm yet to see the movie but this quote intrigues me.

What motivates me?

Bitterness, cynicism, and idle hatred.

It's simple, I get up in the morning because I know there's a world out there to hate. A world which is fundamentally antagonistic, one which is populated by selfish, myopic, and above all arrogant people (myself included) and it feels good. Nothing makes me feel better than a good old misanthropic rant. Impotent rage, w00t!

Although, chances are, I probably just need a good lay.

Waking life (movie). MUST WATCH. Most incredible movie EVER.

I heard that Tim Leary said as he was dying that he was looking forward to the moment when his body was dead but his brain was still alive. You know they say that there's still six to twelve minutes of brain activity after everything else is shutdown. And a second of dream consciousness, right, well, that's infinitely longer than a waking second. You know what I'm saying?

a single ego is an absurdly narrow vantage from which to view this ... this experience. And where most consider their individual relationship to the universe, I contemplate relationships ... of my various selves to one another.

I had a friend once who told me that the worst mistake that you can make is to think you are alive, when you're really asleep in life's waiting room. The trick is to combine your waking rational abilities with the infinite possibilities of your dreams. 'Cause if you can do that you can do anything. Did you ever have a job that you hated? Worked really hard at? A long, hard day at work, finally you get to go home, get in bed, close your eyes, and immediately you wake up and realize that the whole day at work had been a dream? It's bad enough that you sell your waking life for ... for minimum wage, but now they get your dreams for free.

I told Rebma she needs a good lay and she got all angry.

Anyways, there's an Incubus song called the warmth. In it they go: "don't let the world bring you down, not every one here is that f-ed up and cold. Remember why you came and while your alive, experience the warmth before you grow old."

Good philosophy to live by.

The knowledge that one day the entire universe will decompose into its totally basic particles, and that nothing anybody has ever done really means anything.

Make things matter atleast for yourself. That's what I do.

The quest is to be liberated from the negative, which is really our own will to nothingness. And once having said yes to the instant, the affirmation is contagious. It bursts into a chain of affirmations that knows no limit. To say yes to one instant is to say yes to all of existence - Otto Hofmann
