I'd do it, but you know I'm a rotten liar.

Der Zauberer>

The Koran clearly says that it is allowed to have more than one wife, but that you must treat them all equally good.
Therefore most muslims consider it impossible to have more than one wife...

There has been rather odd standards regarding marriages in Europe to, so I don't see why it would be impossible to allow.
Personally I would never want to have more than one wife...and I really can't understand why anyone would. But in other societies, where the social welfare is lower or non-existant, it probably makes more sense.

As long as all involved parties are ok with it I don't see a real reason for making it illegal...but that's just my view :)

Why would anyone want a wife in the first place? Look at my parents. Sometimes I think people get married for the sex....oh wait....

Hmm.. More than one wife = more than one sandwhich.

The sandwich thing is an important consideration, Swymir, that I had neglected to think of.

Sure, in other societies it might not be worth bothing about: when the people cannot even vote to elect their own leader, or practise any religion but Islam or Christianity or whatever. And when noone has enough to eat. Or when people get tortured a lot. Then it's a relatively unimportant issue.

But in a more "advanced" society; one that ostensibly favors equality, where most people get fed if they wish, then you can start to think about having policies that make sense in the culture, and insure the rights of individual people.

And just because someone's Holy Book says to do it, doesn't necessarily make it a good idea in modern society. If the government were to allow Christians to follow the ancient Hebrew's lead, then they would have to let the Christians kill all the pagans and non believers and tear down whatever things they would deem are idols or perfidious to a God-fearing society. Not that Christians think that's a good idea (though they do seem to like making inappropriate comparisons of the United States with the ancient Israelite nation), and not that exploiting women and encouraging the development of levels or castes of society, which widespread polygyny can do, is quite as bad as genocide; still the point is salient I think.

Yeah, exactly ... what ... I ... was ... thinking?
