Yes, Entropia is the game with the fixed exchange rate between the in-game money and the US dollar. And I don't have any objections, like HF :) ... Of course they're making a profit that way, but they're not hiding it or anything. I think it's just a clever way of making a lot of money by running an online game. Downside is that it gives a big advantage for rich players over poor ones. If you're looking for a game where you are more equal than in real life, it's definitely the wrong game.

It's rather unclear from your post what happened to SeeD - but I'll read the article :)

Ah, that pisses me off majorly, people who have access to money (ie physically having it, or having a card to pay for it, or a paypal account) having advantages over the rest.. That's pretty much our second organisational goal for my 3D MMORPG (fantasy) called Sylorn some of you may of heard of.. (http://www.sylorn.com). We're not going to have a subscription system (at least, we've signed off on not having one for a minimal of 1 year after the game is released) and no weapon purchases through real-life money..

Yes excuse that. Thellis (our web master) just haaad to go on holidays. Oh, how convenient that he returns the day World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade (an expansion for a hugely successful MMORPG) comes out! Eh!

Otherwise bypass that and go straight to http://forums.sylorn.com , where the majority of the planning and organisation is done.

Or wait for the site. ;)

4. War of Empires

You do?!

Who are you on there?! :o

I've tried a few games...

War of Empires is the only one I've played for a considerable time (about 21 months now; about 2 months after it started).
Cantr II comes second on time played now (about 4 months). :)
Both good, make sense and are not daunting when you log in (WoE had a good quick start guide, Cantr has a good Wiki), and both have an active forum where the game designers particupate. Cantr has the advantage of needing less online time, so that's why I'm spending more time here at the moment.

Then there are a few I tried and didn't get on with...

Lords of Domination - only thirty players and online time mattered too much.
Filarn - corrupt moderation, absent administration, and a host of bugs/loopholes that were never fixed as a result.
Medaeval Wars - same game as Filarn, but with a different colour scheme so logged out pretty quickly.
Space Merchant Realms - Most boring game I've yet played, and I did try really hard to find it fun for a couple of weeks, but it was just dull.
X-Kings - only way to get ahead was to have friends to donate credits to you, so it was a popularity contest, not a strategy game.
Conquer.be - far too much online time required.
Battlemaster - somewhat similar to Cantr but too hard to get into.
Dark Throne - given the link by a friend, soon found out why; it's another popularity contest, more people you get to join, better you do.

So I don't recommend any of that list!

Anyway, here's a really cool little flash game you can play in a few minutes while you wait for Cantr to load in slow moments... :D

Goonzu Online
http://global.goonzu.com/center/default.asp

Real fun mmorpg, 100% free.
Towns can be taken over (I believe) by different factions. The economy shifts dependant on supply, demand, etc, and it's dependant on player markets. Random in game events keep things interesting and fresh, and instead of getting just gold and items from monsters, you get materials to trade or make things with. Items degrade, so you can't just hoard away your wicked weapons.

It's a really great game. I'm just pissed it doesn't work on my computer anymore... stupid old piece o'....

Travian.com

There is no roleplay I have encountered, though that seems to be a personal choice as there is plenty of scope for it forum-wise. But it is a game of creating a village. Highly addictive.

I've seen it mentioned on the Polish, Spanish, Finnish and Swedish forums. And it truly is an international game. There are national versions, but the main one is best in my opinion. Give it a try.

Its a skill-leveling game with a great community.. best thing is you don't have to be at the screen to play it.. just do something else while Syrnia is in the background.

Some of the concepts of this game would be really cool. Like the count down thing and showing a screen shot of what you are doing. I know the screen shot thing would not be hard to implement imo and would add a few more graphics to the game. The timer may be a different story, but I guess it couldn't hurt to ask. :)
