Yes, I was invited to help form the new government.

Me and the General, we're big friends, us two. Go way back.

He's asked me to be election commisioner.

Well it is sort of a democracy. Just that not everyone is allowed to make the decisions or knew that there was a decision to be made. Anyways, it can't be any worse than America where most people don't even vote and then complain that everything is screwed up.

I was in Thailand (get the spelling right) this summer, before the coup. I have several contacts there. When I was talking to a Bangkok Post editor, one of the predominant English speaking papers in Southeast Asia, it was pretty clear that Thaksin's administration was rather unpopular due to deep-rooted corruption. That's one reason why there wasn't any armed opposition to the coup.

(As a side-note, Americans constitutionilize the abolishment (and re-creation) of government if it does not serve the will of the people.)

They were celebrating the King's 60th year to the ascension of the throne this year when I was there. It was like a sea of yellow. I highly recommend visiting the country.

You don't go on vacation in a country during a military coup. That's the joke.

Thaskin's going because he didn't reign in the arbitrary murders commited by the army in the south. The Thai people don't like that, I'm told. Espicially not one's from the south, like the good General.

Actually that would be the perfect time to go on vacation. Imagine the prices and you won't have to deal with big crowds.

You'd have the tourist district following you around, tending to your every whim!

Hmmmm...

On the contrary. You could walk the town in a swagger and curse at the locals with impunity. Nobody would mug a tourist with the army about.
