Hi!!!!
My part of Honolulu just got power back on a little while ago (at about 9:30 pm) after it being out since the 6.7 magnitude earthquake at 7:08 am today.
If you haven't heard on the news there was lots of property damage on the big island but no reports of serious injuries or deaths. Oahu has a more complex power system, I guess, so we didn't have power even though every other island did. This mostly just resulted in everyone being hot and sweaty all day and long, long lines at the few stores and restaraunts that were open.
I just bought batteries for my flashlight last week but they were the wrong size so after dark I just had one little candle but really didn't need it very much. Thank goodness the power is back on because everyone was starting to loose water also, which would have made things very bad.
Fortunately, the batteries fit my radio so I could get the news although we didn't get any information at all until about an hour after the earthquake. I later found out that if there had been a tsunami it would have reached Oahu in 15 minutes. If there had been one I hope the tsumami alarm would have gone off because I live about five blocks from the ocean. I put on my running shoes and got ready to run for the hills but didn't have to...which was nice because the rain was pouring down.
Hawaiian's are so cool. Everywhere there was talk of treating each other with the spirit of aloha (especially driving with aloha). I recently learned that aloha means "God's breath."
I'm tired. Going to sleep now that the air conditioner is back on and the excitement is over (I hope).
Jeanne

I am on the big island, but the East coast in Hilo. I felt the main quake and the first big aftershock (or second quake,,, I heard the second ws 5.8 ) I was at work, in a hospital... Sitting in the breakroom, getting ready to start the day... I heard a rumble and felt the shake start.. I looked at a coworker (native) and said whats that? He says earthquake.. like it was nothing... then he got an odd look on his face, said hmm it's a big one.... got up and stood in the doorway...I followed...
It is such an odd feeling to feel the tons of concrete around you begin to shake and sway... My first experience... I do understand though.. Honolulu has it bad with the rain they have had! Glad you are ok Kinvoya!!!
