Dressing up is called LARP (live-action role-play) and while people like to do that too, it's a much rarer form of play. Most people who play pen and paper rpgs do so in the comforts of their own home and stay away from the cloaks, tunics, and fake swords.

Rule of thumb for geeks/nerds:

Geeks go to the party and get wedgies from everyone (Upchuck in Daria is a good example)

Nerds don't go to the party as they are studying, and end up with a high paid job and carry their wallets around in helicopters.
