Animals/Tiere
Greetings! I'm the new Resource Department Shepherd, charged with keeping watch over the animals in Cantr. I'm starting this thread so I can get feedback from all the language groups about the animal situations on their islands. Your feedback is appreciated, even if (especially if) everything is perfect (if it's not broke, don't fix it).

Wo haben wir elephants?? Ich will da denn spielen!
The main German region is pretty animal wealthy right now. I think it is just about perfect for a possible hunting culture. A lot of game animals about, with little to no dangerous species.

Do you mean the German/Dutch/Spanish island when you say "German main region"? I think you are right. The regions wildlife is pretty balanced.
On the other hand there are some places, not on the mainland, with up to 50-60 elephants at one place. That's really scary, especially if you're alone and out of onions.
But of course, that's the way a mostly unpopulated region develops. Strange that the elephants seem to replicate like rabbits though. (Or like lemmings. I've seen more than 300 at one place in an other language area)

Doug R. wrote:Elephants just have long lifespans compared to other animals. That combined with their near invincibility will cause large herds on unpopulated islands.
Interesting. I didn't know that animals die at all. Except by hunting of course. Which parameters determine the population dynamics of Cantr animals by the way? Or can I read about that in the wiki?

Elephants:
Elephants have been changed; they now no longer inhabit hills but can inhabit desert. As one of the only groups that actually has a history of coexistence with these animals, I realize that this change could have serious social, economic, and practical repercussions.
I made this change because elephants are not physiologically adapted to living in hills; I've watched tons of nature shows and have never seen an elephant anywhere other than on flat land, and this change is in keeping with my long-term goal to provide diverse and realistic ecosystems.
If this change is seriously going to screw things up in your language group, let's talk about it here.
Edit: Nevermind, they've been changed back.

Yes. If you could send me the location IDs of the locations on those islands, that would be great. Multiple islands are grouped into a single region with no distinction, so it's very difficult to impossible for me to know which island I'm dealing with just by accessing the database. Places with no animals will be the first to get new species when I make them

Doug R. wrote:Some Dutch players have been complaining that their island fauna is boring. Since you share the islands with them, I'm posting here as well. If there is a strong consensus that you want me to move ahead with the fauna changes, I will do so. Here are the animals that were picked to populate the two islands but never implemented:
Owl island:
rabbit
bear
pigeon
owl
deer --> red deer
alligator
cow --> goat
wild boar --> giant forest hog
zebra --> eliminated
Rattlesnake island (the only island with enough contiguous swamp to support a rich swamp fauna):
rattlesnake
swamp snake
mountain goat --> eliminated
deer --> fallow deer
cow --> gaur
horse --> eliminated
rabbit --> eliminated
black goose
gray fox
caiman
chicken
