What happens when a player chooses a character to play in a certain language group, but the character spawns in another language group? Do they still speak as the selected language?

I'd say they do. After all, forcing the Swedes that spawn in the Turkish area to speak Turkish is a bit harsh.

Speak the language you first chose to speak.

He may have done, but nobody knows because he's locked up.

I had a character spawn in Rus because some English explorers were visiting there. They took off without me and I found out later that I was in Rus. There is no way I could have spoken their language because as a player I don't know Russian.

Is that Omeo island? Nowadays I bet there's more English than Russian there. Kinda like American explorers vs natives.

Actually, I'm not sure what the island was called. I travelled around for years without seeing a single person and then just as I was finishing my longboat a woman arrived and managed to tell me that I was in Rus but she couldn't speak very much English.

Ahh, Omeo! I just discovered last week that place had a name. Very quiet there...I'm off to map it and become just as popular as "treefeather"

Ohh no you won't , my character already mapped the coastline. The problem is he doesn't want to share it for free so only like two people have seen it so far.

I can only imagine what he's charging for a peak at it.

Hahahahaha I can only imagine what you might be thinking! Naw, the first person is his girlfriend and the other one... I think the bought that one's loyalty by giving him equipment and showing him what the world looks like, or at least tried to. If I see him again then I know I've gained an ally.
Rus maps

I started my map back when Rus still had Jos names for each town (Klanniroizi Naheus, Nnaillorian Sabossa, Reemslidon). I didn't make it to all of the towns before we lost the names, though
The English speakers are mostly on the coast. I am not sure if the spawn algorithms have them there too - I haven't managed to spawn an English char there yet.
The Russian speakers are mostly in the interior. Some use Cyrillic (which your browser can be setup for, but many don't bother) and others use Transliteration (Russian language in english characers. Da!)
Finally, my character has been calling the land Rus, (Рус in Cyrillic) - this legend appears on all her maps. Oh, and she just met the captain of the Naron Navigator!
Do I win the prize?
