growing number of animals

I dont know if its the same everywhere, but where my characters live, the number of animals is steadily growning.

Before the individualisation of animals there were at max 20 or 30 of one species, but now I see 50 wild boars and 50 bears on location.

They make life outside very dangerous.

Is there some upper limit or natural treshold on the number of animals in areas, or will their numbers grow and grow..

If the last is the case I think the animals will win this game...., because the number of dutch players isnt growning, so we cant hunt them more.

Yes animal numbers are growing at c.1% per day - some species faster than others. Also when animals were individualised we did indeed remove the 20 animals of 1 type in a location upper limit.

The growth has deliberately been allowed so we can gather the necessary stats to implement death by old age for animals . This will be implemented in the very near future. When that's settled down we will probably start looking at limiting numbers within locations

Further down the road are palns for animal on animal predation as well which will help balance numbers further.

So ... what you're saying is:

"Just sit tight with 1 wolfs, 8 rabbits, 18 horses, 21 deers, 5 pelicans, 14 wild boars, 27 bears, 16 racoons, 3 cheetahs in town, or the other town with 5 wolfs, 18 rabbits, 13 horses, 35 cows, 9 deers, 5 pelicans, 23 wild boars, 22 bears, 13 racoons, 5 cheetahs or that nice peacable desert with a mere 15 horses, 13 desert snakes, 53 desert tortoises in it, and all the while the animals will keep growning and each and every one of those suckers gets to decide if it attacks each and every character several times a day, and don't worry about it, because when we get around to it, sometime later, they'll die because they've lived long enough, or we had this idea we might code in that they even attack each other, maybe, if we like that idea enough to put it to code."

In civilised areas, on old lands, this effect of 1% a day will be negligable. Some newspawns might finally have enough rabbits to punch and get the small bones to make a knife, legally. Yay. But in uncivilised lands, Burgeo, Aki, that godforsaken place with lemmings, They're going to get over run. I mean, there's nothing on Aki to make string with, hasn't been since string was added, so the only weapons are being held by people are made from the one guy making steel, or from people that have been killed by animals. Can't make bows there anymore, and we're going to let the animals swarm while you get through the to do list untill you get down to where you care?

I can understand it's not a priority when it doesn't affect your characters, but the ones of us that are getting the short end of the stick here are feeling it.

I hope that either the stuff that needs coding gets moved up the list, or animal agression is turned down some untill that can happen. Otherwise, some places are going to be getting empty.

4 wolfs
5 rabbits
12 horses
10 hawks
19 wild boars
23 bears
16 turkeys
14 gorillas
6 pigeons
29 rhinos
21 lions
28 elephants

And we've been killing about 15 animals already. Give me a break. Most of these animals are stronger than we are. I vote for a lot less violence. Though I have a charrie that is constantly between 20 or more attacking animals, though they didn't hurt them yet. He never hunted himself either. Is there a relation between this?

197 animals, two new ones every day. I hope that will be rabbits.

No you don't. Really.

The only solution to the current number of animals in the less populated islands is to keep moving, or hide indoors constantly.

Just how large are Cantr locations anyway?

A single adult elephant eats about 250 kg a day. 28 adult elephants? Imagine the acres upon acres that they would require. On Burgeo alone, almost every location has elephants, usually in double digits.
Such a high number of elephants wouldn't be able to survive in that space. Old age is the last thing they should have to worry about...

That's just elephants, 18 horses, 21 deers, 23 wild boars, 35 cows etc. that Agar just described (which is a very common example). They would need acres upon acres too for survival.

The 20 animals per type limit may have been crude (and too high) but it at least it was some limit on natural growth. I welcome predetation, but I would suggest that there be an additional limit, to take into account the fact that a single location can, by no means, realistically support that many elephants, let alone the other animals.

I had asked for resource limits for a long time, got a good start with resource slots, indicating that resources in Cantr aren't quite as infinite and varied.
Cantrians have to deal with some form of resource limits, shouldn't Cantrian animals have to as well?

If the goal of this limitless animal growth was to help implement routines for animal predation and aging, couldn't that have been done on the test database?

Well, if the growth continues and nothing happens. I think all my characters will just move inside some building and sit it out, untill the programming department finds some way to limit the number of animals.

This is because there is no way you can hunt down 50 bears and 50 wild boars with about 10 people and only a 3 who can hunt every day.

In the end even the more populated villages will be run over as the animals spread out. It will be like the old days again when there where 250 cows on one location.
Luckily they all disapeared in one day suddenly!
I guess such a drastic action will be needed once more soon.

Its wierd. Some violent animals seem tame in some locations.

You know what? one time, I sugested the PERFICT ANSWERE TO THIS, AND i will not say anything els... cous i acedentally deleated it and now my ADD thing that makes me feel overwelmed when i loos somthing such as writing, i stop and don't want to write it over. Even though i'v alredy written about twice that much... I'm not going to.

But I will say one thing. FAMIN!!! THATS WHAT WE NEED TO IMPLUMENT!!! FAMIN!! You need to make it so that horses and things can't live in one place all the time, becous eventually they will get to bigfore theyr envyronment,(all places should have a set DFP(dayly food production) for animals, and sertain animals should have to eat some of this food.) and then the rate fore birth should be -20% per day. BUT HAD YOU LISTEND TO ME WHEN I SUGESTED IT First!!!

Please do NOT reduce the animal growth rate as there are more than a few areas which are animal-starved and battling to make ends meet. The animal overruns should be capped in some other way.

Holy crap I agree with the Sociologist!

We all know Aki and Burgeo are vicious and for some reason always have been. I for one am always thinking about those areas. One thing to note is that they are primitive, and primitive means difficult to survive in. That's adventurous, requires a different survival strategy, and leads to a different society.

Have any characters been mauled to death by desert tortoises? If they have, I would like to hear about it. Maybe then bringing them up in all of these discussions will not seem like such a moot point to me. Elephants, wolves, cheetahs, wild boars...that is a different story. I have seen what they can do and that is what I am focused on. Lemmings, there may be 150 of them in one town but I am pretty sure the odds of survival from them are quite good.

The problem is clearly not a simple matter, and all of us in resources now inherited it. :D A lot of fun trying to figure out how all of the animals are placed and migrate without use of a map, trying to figure out while the populations are in logarithmic growth phase on Aki while they are extinct in the Polish and Turkish areas, trying to figure out which reports are actual game problems and which are just players complaining because life isn't handed to them on a plate.

So please bear with us and we will try to get sorted what needs sorted. :)

I have enough characters living in non-dangerous areas. I am enjoying my new character that has to find a way to not die in the land of the animal attacks. If he dies, he dies.

Just a wild idea here:

Is it possible that animals could eat the same resources that the charries use? For example, if a town has nothing but wood, there'd probably be no animals there, but a town with, like, asparagus, tomatoes or potatoes, etc, could support a lot more animals.

Not sure that that's a good thing, though... :?

So there should be no animals in forests?
