I think I'm a lesbian on a commune. Nothing really happens there.

I know I am a lesbian. And a thief has just taken worthless stuff and ran away in our boat. He will die if he returns.

Lesbianism makes more sense in cantr than it does in RL... :P

And that comment was not meant to be anti-lesbians...

But those are a lot of lesbian characters, you gotta admit...

Even though I agree it makes more sense in Cantr than in RL, there's no reporduction there so there's no reason the majority of people would be instinctively attracted to people of the opposite gender.

Lesbianism makes sense in real life, too. Twice as much of a good thing! Also, generally speaking, men can be dicks (insert obvious pun) and women know what women like in bed.

Not to mention you can't help the way you're born

The only thing mildly depressing about lesbians is that they're not interested in men. By definition

And now the flamewar starts.

I don't think it really makes sense as far as the 'big picture' of carrying on the species goes, I mean it's not like you're going to see lesbian whooping cranes or anything, but the planet is overcrowded with humans now anyway so it's not like it matters.

...and yeah these kind of discussion usually start falmes so I'm leaving now...

Strictly speaking, homosexuality does not make sense in RL... bisexuality does, as shown most successfully by those Greeks, for the very reasons you described, plus continuing the species...

Anyways, in Cantr none of that exists... so homosexuality makes as much sense as heterosexuality...

Well, actually... I don't know about lesbian whooping cranes, but there's a lot more homosexuality -- and beyond -- in nature than many would like to admit. The most famous case being the Bonobo apes, who engage in group sex, mutual masturbation, homosexual activity, etc. It's basically, like, anything goes.

Then there's penguins. Male penguins of certain species pair up all the time.

So it may not 'make sense' in terms of gene/species surival, but it does occur in nature.

And even when gene/species survival is a driving factor, some pretty weird things happen out there in the big bad world. How about a certain species of African treefrog, that, when males are scarce, the females acutally change gender and become male. Or the preying mantis, where the female bites off the head of the male during copulation, causing him to ejaculate wildly -- in other words, if he's more likely to die than survive while mating, he's more likely to procreate, which seems completely antithetical to the evolutionary model, at least on the face of it.

Just rambling here, to no end really.

Oh, and just on a personal note and to get back slightly on topic. I'm a guy, but I play a lesbian in Cantr. I highly recommend it. :D

That must be why my guys have so hard to find a date. All the ladies are being taken by other ladies possibly played by guys. So a guy played by a girl doesn't stand a chance.

I would say that Guys who are played by girls are just as able to get a date as guys played by guys... perhaps more so, for some reason. :?

And saztronic, just to clarify... despite all the examples of homosexuality you gave, in the majority of cases those will still reproduce making it bisexuality. And my entire point is: none of that matters in Cantr, with no reproduction...

Hmm... some kind of strange, inexplicable vortex in the information superhighway seemed to swallow the posts I had split, thanks Oasis :)

Anyway...

Why doesn't homosexuality make sense for humans? Or why does it make more sense in Cantr? Just because Cantr has no reproduction?

We have clearly evolved to have an intelligence beyond a simple instinct for reproduction, so it's not as if 'carrying on the spcies' is the main driving force for all people.

As saztronic pointed out, homosexuality and bisexuality is actually quite common amongst most species. Largely because it helps form social bonds.

Homosexuality and bisexuality makes as much 'sense' in RL as it does in Cantr, reproduction really doesn't come into the equation.

And, anyway, where are these hordes of lesbians, eh? I don't see so many of them around like people have been saying. Much to the frustration of one of my oldest characters... fifty years of enforced celibacy...
