jewelry - soldering iron ..???

Postby Bear » Fri Mar 03, 2006 3:41 pm

Why has this change been made? It used to take a soldering iron to make some of the jewelry, and now, a simple hammer will do. What's the point in that?

I have a character who spent many years to be able to make one, he had a life, now he's only got a bloody useless soldering iron..

It was only ever required for like two pieces out of the four possible. It still is required for 2. I know because I waited years for the cobalt for a soldering iron as well.

Bear, can you give some more details? What used to take the iron and now doesn't, and what doesn't but you think should?

Some of us wanted to apply the soldering iron to a few realistic applications, but feared riots. Personally, I don't think it should be useless.

How about the soldering iron speeds up jewelry creation? That'll make everyone happy.
All of my endings are waiting to begin.

Just so I'm not misunderstood, I meant that it was only ever used for two pieces as far as I know. That's the glass bead ring and bracelette I think.

Edit: And I wasn't questioning what was up with it, seeing as I don't think anything's changed, just was questioning what Bear meant.

And after looking, yes: GBRing GBbracelette.

I dunno if it is, but surely a soldering iron could prove useful in manufactuirng radios...?

The copper necklace has required a soldering iron for as long as I can remember. I don't think that the soldering iron has been removed from any pieces, but as Missy has said, it was never a requirement for much of the jewelry.

What's the distribution of cobalt like? We (Tailoring) haven't completed reviewing the jewelry yet, but it's better to not cripple the market, but also it's nice to reward those who want to actually do fine work with a non-useless tool.

The diamond necklace needed a soldering iron, too. I once opted for the diamond choker because I didn't have a soldering iron.

Yes, the diamond necklace needed a soldering iron, and, silver diamond rings needed a soldering iron.
As far as I remember, most jewelry including silver, gold and diamonds needed a soldering iron to be made.
I haven't kept any notes so I can't be more specific but surely someone must know.., as far as I understand this has been changed within the last month.

And I would still like to know why as it makes no sense whatsoever to me.

As far as I can tell nothing has changed in jewellery tool requirements in the last 4-5 months (as far records I have accesss to go back - c.20th Oct 2005) - probably longer

For the record
    glass bead bracelet
    glass bead ring
    embroided bracers
    gold necklace
    silver necklace
    copper necklace
    gold diamond necklace
    silver diamond necklace
    embroided necklace
    brooch

are the jewellery items which currently require a soldering iron to make.
There may be others which have build requirements which also require a soldiering iron , but I don't think this is the case.

Some of these items may not be availble for production yet.

I will let RD know the realtive distribution of cobalt privately

EDIT : There is one jewellery item the Diamond Collar which has never required a soldering iron - (as opposed to the Silver or Gold diamond necklace) - Is this a swedish translation issue ? - The english for collar may have been translated to the swedish for necklace

I trust your word for it, thanks for checking. I was pretty sure more of the jewelry needed a soldering iron.

It's not a swedish translation issue, more of an OOC-wine issue..

Clothing and jewellery hasn't been translated yet. Or they may have been but it isn't implemented. :)

You're quite right - They haven't yet been made available for translation . I should have remembered this as I've asked Resources to let ProgD know the moment the main rewriting of the clothing descriptions are finished , then we can make them available for translation.

Until the descriptions are finalised (or at least mainly finished) there is no point in having the translators work on them.
