starting out in an unpopulated location

Ok, I have been avoiding browsing through the WIKI extensively, and only checked this forums a few times for bug-reports with the recent wierdness.

However, I need some OOC help with the game.
I spawned one of my two starting characters in an unpopulated location, where I juuuust managed to awkwardly gather enough Rice to keep from starving.
I've been learning my way around since the beginning of January (I forget what CANTR time as I only "clicked" with the calender system there)

The location I started in has the following recources:
Gas, Sand, Rice, Rye
And I've only ever seen these animals,
1 rabbit, 5 deer, 3 mooses...which I Awkwardly hit for 0-2 each time I attack them. At this rate, the two things I know how to make, a bone knife, and bone bakh-angh will take me approximately 5 months to kill one of the critters, carve myself a knife, so I can carve myself a weapon.
(learned from my other character, truthfully)

Is there ANY advice on what to look at doing first, other than read the WIKI for help? I had assumed intensive use of the WIKI was a bit too much OOC info, and also realize asking this very question is probably too much OOC info. I just want at least a direction while learning this game. It's not lying when they say there is a steep learning curve! :)

Mainly, I'd rather appreciate something general like "you need to find wood/steel/seaweed before anything!" in which case I will explore the nearby locations once I get some more food (as unsure how long the two "path" roads will have me travelling).... or "You need a hammer for just about anything" in which case I will look up what a hammer does/uses....or even "kill some critters, use their bones, the rest you are on your own", in which case I will have that character cry himself to sleep at night from lonelyness and boredom. :?

thanks in advance for any advice.

Good news: use of the wiki is totally acceptable, because it concentrates ONLY on the mechanics of the game, not on the meat and potatoes (as it were) of cantr II: society. Browsing through in-game menus and reading as much as you can on the wiki are permitted, and indeed encouraged.

The wiki was the first major departure from the 'find out in game' rule that had hitherto been the policy, official or otherwise.

Since the wiki is official and moderated by the CD, any information you find there is permissible to use in-game. (unless of course somehow information relating to societies, persons, etc. has been slipped in there)

Well, just off the top of my head, if I was in that situation I'd get a few kilos of rice together, while at the same time hunting every day and making a knife if I managed to kill something. Then I'd name the location and travel to find out where each of the roads lead...the fact that you were spawned there at all must mean that there were people there recentky and maybe you can find them. (At least I think so, I remember readign somewhere that there had to be at least two people around in order to make a newspawn, but someone tell me if I'm wrong.)

There were 5 people in my area, and less than a week after spawning, three of them were dead (from starvation?) and one leaving without ever saying a word. The last was at 98% damage, so I did manage to finish him off and get a few grams of hide(183g), eggs (12g), and nickel(1200g) from the corpse...not that those things are of any use to me right now, but it's a start.

I'll gather some more food, then set out to explore the area. There was a boat at the dock here, but it was empty of people and objects until an unnamed pewrson came two weeks ago and sailed off. *sigh* Looks like just a case of bad timing. I'll name my place then too, good idea!

Hehehe, you see, Cantrians steal ANYTHING that's not nailed to the floor. Most people would've probably taken the boat. Anyway, for many people (now who was that idiot threatening to kill their characters as long as it takes to get one spawn in an uninhabited location?) it would be an absolute dream come true to spawn in a place with no other people. What a chance for exploration, what an adventure! In fact, my first character spawned alone as well. It might even be the best option to get to know the interface and stuff, without oldbies laughing around in a circle. Exept that you get lonely and bored and would eventually quit, if it weren't for other characters in active places. I suggest keeping a travel journal.

Ohhh, it's the old days coming back again! Man I wish I could spawn somewhere without knowing where I am. Well, now place names have been wiped, but communities still remember and once you find out the community name, you OOC:ly remember the whole damn history of the island and it's hard to get the same feeling as when you were still new. Treasure the moments!

Aren't I feeling nostalgic today? Sorry... X) Yeah you might notice my characters being hyperactive as well. I don't know why just today.

Try being at a place you don't recognize, with two other people, one of whom doesn't speak your language and the other rarely speaks at all. And nobody can tell you what the place is called and there are no other signs of habitation :-P

I'm loving it!

Whats is spawning IN populated areas that have a bad way of taking care of newspawns. You don't get food from the town and you're not allowed to hunt or gather without a lengthy citizenship system and aproval from the sleeping authorities? You're better off alone.

i have had a guy living alone for maybe a cantr year now...but there is never more then about 5 people with him and they all always decide okay lets get this place moving, they go out and trade and never come back. Or they just die. This guy has been just collecting rice for most of his life, though he will give it out when people ask

When you explore, name each town you visit AND each area that you could travel to.

For example:

Home

NNE of Home
W of Home
SW of Home

This will help you find your way around. If you really want to be ambitious, copy the picture of each location and put them together for a visual map.

Hmm... I have a girl that's mostly lived by herself and has only seen about 6 or 7 people total in the 14 years of her life... two people were there when she spawned but they moved on and she's seen a couple of people since then... She's even done a little travelling... It is interesting though when she comes across people :)

Ideally.
In practice, it's BDFL doesn't play Cantr. There is no effective moderation, because the only sysop doesn't check the wiki.

I've got a character in an unihabited place. I managed to come across two other people, one of which is exploring with me. I love it! I saw the dead body of a woman and told him I wanted one :)
I can't complain about finding a mountain loaded with metals and not giving a hoot. We are happy to live off spinach and search for wood. Ahh the simple life.

This conversation reminds me of the part in the War of the worlds musical cd where that weird digging guy sings about starting a whole new world underground!

I have a character in an uninhabited region.
