Language soup!?

With the current spawning system a character spawns close to another character of the same language group, right? At least so I figured when I spawned a swedish character in the turkish area with a ship with a swedish name just leaving the harbor. Since then another swedish character has appeared there, I am not sure if it is a spawn or a traveller though.

If my above assumption is correct wouldn't, in time, the different language groups be totally mixed across the entire cantr universe? Wouldn't language selection of your character become meaningless, since you always will spawn in something I imagine will appear as the lobby of the UN building in New York?

So, is this good or bad?

There's still a higher chance to spawn somewhere with lots of people of your own kind, rather than just a couple. It will take ages before language groups are mixed to such level it turns hard to find someone who speaks your language.

That's pretty cool actually. I didn't know that dynamic was part of the the spawning system.

I really hope that an extensive mixing of language groups does not occur. It is great to have "border towns" where the language groups interact, but overall I hope we can maintain a separation. I still feel that Cantr cultures are far to homogenous as it is, mixing all the languages together will make it feel even more so, IMO.

It seems very unlikely that extensive mixing will ever occur, but if it hypothetically did, I don't think that would create homogeneity at all. After all, just because all these language groups are in the same town doesn't mean they get along. I think that the towns with the highest concentration of different languages would most likely spring up around valuable resources, and that sort of situation would probably be quite tense indeed. Another plus, we would all get to learn a little bit of another language (or several) just by playing the game. I'm all for extensive mixing.

I think it might cause war.

Oh, definitely. How difficult it would be to be a spy in such a war... nearly impossible, I should think.

Why - maybe there is another posibilty - cooperation... If we find method to communicate without CRB ( I have idea ) this will be not so dificult. People talking in diferent languages can live in same place - and they can learn second nation language or create interlingua - few words is enaugh to basic communication...

The Cantr French and Cantr Dutch have already had much contact with each other. The Northern Cantr French used to interact regularly with the Dutch, while the Southern Cantr French are led by an ardent tribal supremist.

On this topic. Two spanish chars have discovered the Dutch island, travelled to one of the more important towns( Sil, 10+ citizens :)) and now all of a sudden there are spanish chars spawning all over the place( 5 new chars in that one town so far).

My char in that town, accidentally (or intentionally it's how you see it) as the town guard already had to lock up two spanish newspawns(spanish people don't understand dutch, so they can not understand the laws, thus they kill pigeons when it is unlawful, thus my char has to act...:) he killed one of the newspawns for attacking a pigeon, miscalculated the impact of his battle axe ;)).

Not only in this town, but also in another (Wirwarov) happens something like this. There four or five Germans have landed and are also discovering the Dutch island. So far there's been no spawning though.

And lastly in another town (there are actually five so-called towns in the Dutch area, two of them nearly empty), the first English character has arrived from far over sea. He travelled for 10 years or so.

Concrete: interaction of one language group(dutch) with four others(french, english, spanish and german). So maybe soon we may indeed the language soup spoken of in the topic title.

The originally German-speaking location Kishnakotis already is a spawning point for three different languages (German, Spanish and Dutch) and there are two other bilingual cities that I know of on the Spanish- and German-speaking island. In these cities the two language groups either cooperate or at least live peacefully in the same place together without much interaction. So obviously it doesn't have to cause war... if there isn't an ardent tribal supremist like in the southern French Cantr region. But not even there has been a war against the other language group as far as I know.

A problem with characters from different language groups in the same place is that they dont see what others are doing axcept projects and pointing. If you *smile* or *hug* or what ever, that is done in different languageses. Normally such actions don't apply to what language the person speek, they are understandable. Therefor it would be wise to do such things "in english" in multilingual places until a more expressfull signlanguage is implemented in cantr.

Good point.

I believe the official stance there is that it's okay to write emotes in a language that both parties will be more likely to understand. (ie: English, even if the chars present are Spanish and Dutch)

And Floris, I found your post about the Spanish and Dutch chars extremely interesting...I wonder if that's something that could cause tension and conflict in the future? Have a few foreign traders show up in your little village, and before long your language group is the minority because all of these newspawns who talk just like them are popping up all over the place, and they're instantly more loyal to the people they can understand then to the leader of the town, plus you have no idea what they're saying to each other or what they could be planning...
