Clarification...

I'm trying to help someone manufacture scissors. They were already working on the project and all the tools are there. I tried to register my participation, and it now shows at the top of my screen as an activity. It also shows me as a participant if I go to the activities screen. Yet when I hit the P button, it gave me the following message:

1378-6: You do not have the right tools to work on Manufacturing scissors.

So am I helping or not? If I am, is there any point or is it just adding my name to the list and not actually helping any?

This is probably some simple thing I just don't know yet, but I'm confused. (Nothing new on this end...)

Nope you're not helping. If you don't have the tools to make something, you can't make it. It'd be like trying to make a hammer with no wood.

You've gotta get the required tools before you can work on it

Ah, so even though the tools are already involved in the project I can't use them. Cool.

Are some projects different? I'm also helping crush hematite in a spot. I have a hammer but when I tried to use it I got a message that it wasn't needed, and it let me help on that with no problem. So is that because I had one in my possession, ie if I drop my hammer I wouldn't be able to help?

Just curious, I'll get the nuances eventually. I still think it shouldn't say I'm participating and at the same time say I can't, though, that's what confused me.

You are correct on the hematite issue. If you have it in your possession you use it automatically. If you drop it, you will get a message that you don't have the right tools.

Yes indeed. Each person participating in a project must have ALL of the required tools in each of their inventories. In your proposed case, if you dropped your hammer, you would be unable to help with the crushing project. The button "use on project" is only for things that will be consumed in the project (resources, and semi-finished objects).

Edit: Stan beat me to it

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'll stop asking newbie questions for an hour or two now and go stir up some trouble in-game. (That's Cantr hours though, of course...) :D

Torch, mind if I borrow your thread for my own kind of newbish question?

I'm curious about mudholes. Do they still require water, now that there is no water?

I think so. They're now one the many useless thing in cantr.

Darn. So much for that primitive oven...

Mud would be really useful in the town I'm thinking of, seeing as we're a good distance from both wood and stone, but have sand. And we're sitting next to a lake AND a sea. Go figure.

When I started, I also thought that you need to add the tools to the project before you can work on it. I think I even wrote to general support about how my bone knife or needle something doesn't work. Also was wondering why can't I work on a project that requires a shovel when it says shovel in the info, therefore the shovel must have been added by someone! I was thinking that after I finished the project, the tools added to it would be freed and I could get them! But soon I learned how it is...

Doesn't this belong in General Support?

It should have been there at the beginning, but it's sort of morphing into a general "this is what I did as a new player" soul-baring.

Mud is now a resouce that can be gathered directly, rather than made with water and other resources in a machine. And, it can be found on populated lands. I am in a town hemmoraging mud huts, and it's not lake villiage...
