Rules change 32

Jos Elkink says: "I see more and more descriptions of actions in peoples` talking, like *smiles* or ::walks to ...::. As such, this is fine, and it adds to the roleplaying character of the game, but please limit it to behaviour that does not affect a surrounding and does not involve objects that are not actually in the game. E.g. ::hits Paul:: is not allowed, as for that there is a hitting function, or ::hides his bottle:: is not allowed, as there are no bottles in the game, or ::runs behind a building so nobody can see him:: does not mean nobody can see him ... That would simply be a different type of game." (2003-11-07)

I know this sound like I'm cutting my foot off and yelling at the gods but what was the point to this. If we go by this as a strick rule then we are all naked. Also I thought the only rule here was the CR so really I'd like to know what did you mean by this?

I think he is talking about people who do things with ** or == to show something there character is doing but go beyond the limits.

Like a lot of those show what the character is speaking. Other characters hould not know what a character is thinking unless they physically tell the other characters.

That is one reason why I don't like this type and would rather support an emote system that can still be freestyled but will have some rules around it. So you longer see these emotes in the area where a character is talking which will make it much better to look at the character event because it will be better organized. And then my chaacters would begin using emotes.

Anyways, Jos is the owner and creator of the game. Can't he make any rule he wants when he wants?

Yes I know

I was just asking what's he realy going to do strike me down with lightning. Anyway Somethings don't exist in game like cloths so in truth if we follow by how this is writen then yes we are all naked.

Never said we weren't but when clothes are added in game every character will get a generic version of clothes automatically. But clothes haven't been added yet so you are right according to that rule unless Jos wants to make an exception which he can if he wanted.

Generic clothes

Well, two things: 1) no, there is no 'punishment' or so yet - it's by far not as important as the capital rule - but it is just ... well, a friendly request not to overuse the possibility of putting actions in your speaking. Some people were talking about poisoning someone, for example, while that really is impossible as of yet in this game (interesting idea, though :) ...). It is a fine line between adding a little more roleplay to the game by using these texts, and really changing the game from a computer-based environment to a freestyle game. Because the game is completely freestyle in terms of storyline, but it is not in terms of the physical world in which the characters live. That's the whole point :) ...

Well, I guess that covers 2) too :) ... Or what was two, actually? ... *thinks* ... ... ... ...

[you hear some cracking noises]

... ... ...

(no I haven't been drinking today yet ...)

... ... ...

Oooh, yeah, but now I remember, I actually disagree with point 2), so never mind :) ...

By the way, what about emoticons, Jos? IS it OK to use them or would you rather have us not?

Nice picture :)

But emoticons - yes, you can use them, there is no obvious reason why not. Personally, I find it a bit ugly and like ::smiles:: or so better, but that's simply personal taste :) ...

The problem I am beginning to see with this version of the emotes (that being the == or **) is that some players are beginning to use them in notes and not just speech. That's even more annoying as my character cannot see what your character is doing from reading a note. That is the most annoying part of the whole current freestyle emotes in the game currently. That and what other character's thoughts or things that are impossible for my character know without another character saying it first.
