The exchange value doesn't effect me: I use good ole Sterling. What I wanted to know was about the cost for postage and packing, sending it etc. and what's a postal order? why send a postal order when you can send cash?

It doesn't cost much, less then $1US for the postage, a money order is normally about the same. I wouldn't recommend sending cash in the mail however, if it gets lost it's gone, with a money order no one except the person it's wrote out to can cash it, plus if it's lost then you can take the receipt and get another or your money back.

Is it legal to send cash? It is often considered a bad idea, because it is very prone to theft along the way.

I have bno idea, but tell me more about money orders, cost for them etc?

I'm not sure exactly, but its very cheap (my guess is less than a dollar U.S.)

It kind of acts like a check, except that instead of representing money that you have in your account, it is paid for at the time it is givin to you.

for instance, you would go into a bank (also many convenience store) and ask for a money order that equals the amount of 10 pounds. you give them the 10 pounds, plus whatever small charge it takes to get the order, then they give you a piece of paper that basicaly says "who-so-ever this is made out to can cash it in for the amount shown"

basicaly a check that you pay for when you get it.

then in theory you would just mail it to however you are giving the money to.

Possibly. But Jos works so hard to make sure that we pay nothing to play. He needs whatever we can give him, but no one should have to feel pressured or guilted into giving money. And there's no doubt Jos pays out of his own pocket. But I'm sure a few bucks, equivilantly, is a good price to pay to keep a dream running. Which reminds me; I have to work harder so I can give that man some dough. Jos, you rule!

Yes and we all like Jos for that but some who may donate could use subtle reminders

If someone dosen't have a bank account then you should get a money order and mail it to his house (look at the smiley face, it looks like it's drunk)

Yes, a mail order works. The problem is that sending it in a proper way is very expensive. I've had people send donations in an envelop that had cost something like 17 usd (postage) and then it took me around 10 usd to make the actual transfer. That really is a lot of money just for the transfer itself. Someone else posted it in a regular envelop, folded in a little note. That works and it much, much cheaper, but it is also more risky.

I wonder how expensive proper posting within the US is. I like the PO Box suggestion that I read - if someone could collect in the US and then transfer to Paypal we might have a better system.

The best was actually a trick with a friend of mine who has an American bank account but lives here in Dublin - we had a transfer to that account and had it just cashed over here, which is the cheapest and easiest, but it might not always be possible. It would always depend on the willingness of that friend ... Which should be ok generally though.

Any other inventive tricks?

0.37 usd within the us borders for mail. I think that includes Alaska and more important to us Hawaii *wink*.

I have all of those things...but refuse to deal with pay pal or any other type of online payment. Sorry...but we just learned we have people who have our private personal financial info. Its easier for me to write a check/ get a money order and send it half way across the world. lol

I'm sory I bump up this (relatively) old topic, but I have question about donating some money.

I want to donate some money, but doens't want to use pay pall, because it costs money (a small percentage of your donation, but still it cost some money) and sending it in an envelope would be very risky (ok, when you send 5 Euro and it gets lost, it's not a big problem. But when I want to send 50 Euro, and it gets lost, it IS a problem).

So is it possible to... erm... how do you call that in English... when you put money from one bank to another bank account... in dutch we call it 'over maken' (Jos should know, he's dutch/irish ). I dunno if that possible between two different country's...

I'm pretty sure, that Jos also has a dutch account still. Jos is currently really busy, so it might take some time till he reads your question. But Wim might be able to answer it. Sico would certainly be able to answer it, but I am not sure if he is reading the forum at all.
