Jewelry and precious metals

Postby Doug R. » Fri Oct 14, 2005 6:45 pm

I would like to get some player feedback for my article.

If those of you who are interested could answer the following questions:

1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?)

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?

Thanks for your help!

1) My characters consider jewelery a waste of time, and precious metal could be used for more useful things.

2) My characters in general like to wear clothes, though many of them are still naked

3) My characters pretty much ignore what others are wearing.

4) My characters don't care

5) 500g of iron. Off the top of my head, I think iron has more uses.

6) No.

7) My characters in general are attracted to friendly, outgoing people, and they don't really care about appearance. Biggest turn-off would be rudeness.

1) Nope. Then again, most my characters are male, so...
2) I must have pants. Otherwise I feel naked. All other clothing optional.
3) Most people aren't wearing anything at all, so I simply imagine them in 'plain clothes' ... i.e., nothing remarkable. Instead of naked. If I thought of them as naked, things would seem... weird.
4) 'These people have too much money. I must steal from them/con them/suck up to them.'
5) Iron, cold iron, is the master of them all.
6) Nope, not a one.
7) Attract...? Oh. Right. Love is for the weak who cannot defend themselves.

Doug R. wrote:1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?

Yes. For some characters, it just makes pretty jewelry. For others, it's about showing off wealth. I've made iron jewelry before to express wealth, and that the character does not care about iron--she has plenty of it to waste on jewelry.

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?

It depends on the character. Some characters may want to feel more important or show off their wealth to others by wearing nice clothes and jewelry, and others may just like the clothes. . . .

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?)

I don't purposely form images of characters in my mind. I do do it without thinking, and it's based entirely on the character's personality--I would imagine a nice character as good-looking, and I usually don't think about clothing at all, or even age. (Not that I'm imagining naked people--they just wear . . . normal, not-worth-mentioning clothing.) Now that I think about it, I imagine 80-year-old characters as looking to be about 40. Time passes too quickly in Cantr for me to see it otherwise. . . .

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?

They don't react much.

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).

Definitely iron. Who cares about gold?

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?

Yes, when I don't forget. I've never used them, but then again, I only recently started saving them. They could be more interesting as more time passes. . . .

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?

Friendliness. The biggest turn-off would be unfriendliness, rudeness, or stupidity.

1. Why?
To show off wealth, to look pretty. One has a wedding ring as a symbol of commitment. Another one has two rings, one from her dead fiancé and one from a dead friend that was like a daughter to her. They serve as a reminder of the fragility of life

2) How does it feel?
Clothes make them usually feel better, warmer, safer. Some might prefer a loincloth to woolly pants though, to avoid the itch. Jewelry might make them feel awkward because it makes them stand out from the crowd, might attract thieves. But one is hoping that his iron earrings would bring him respect.

3. Others?
I often check what other characters are wearing and it affects my view of them. For example I'd respect someone with clothes more than someone with just plain bone jewellery, and even bones and a loincloth is better than nothing worth mentioning. But I usually don't stop to wonder what coloured hair or skin people have, I seem to imagine everyone with fair skin and brown hair unless mentioned otherwise.

Edit: Oh, and when I see people under thirty wearing nothing worth mentioning, I usually imagine them as pre-teens, underdevelopped... rather savage and dirty.

4. Reaction to jewelry?
Some get jealous, some feel respect and awe. Especially diamonds they notice easily.

5. Gold or iron?
Iron.

6.
I have almost all of my turn reports ever since I started but they take too much time to manage, so many of them just remain in my mailbox. Sometimes I use them to search for old events, and noticing I have removed something containing important events for some of my characters makes me feel sad.

7.
Attractions: Talks and emotes a lot but not too much, gives me room for me to reply. Smiling, even if written by a single word, is often attractive.

Biggest turn-offs: Writing all lowercase or otherwise wrong, no use of punctuation, characters that would accept everything happening to them and/or won't react realistically.

1) No. The closest I've gotten is a character who made silver earrings (instead of storing it) because he happened to have silver.

2) My characters who have made clothes or jewelry made them because they had the resources, and wanted to show it. No other feelings for clothes.

3) I can't say I (as a player) am much good with forming images of characters based on clothes. I note the clothes, but I only really pay attention to personality.

4) They don't.

5) It would depend completely on the trading situation. Some of my characters would take the gold because their location is far from gold but near iron ingredients. Others, with iron harder to get, would take the iron.

6) I save all my summaries. I often search them for information on characters my characters have seen before, or other past events.

7) I have never played romantic relationships into my characters, but I would rate forwardness in another character's approaches to mine as a major turn-off. This, coupled with their complete lack of interest in characters that don't attempt to interact with them, would probably be the reason why they don't get in relationships. I have played all of my characters this way, mostly because that's what I'm like and I don't feel able to play anything else.

I like this thread :)
Doug R. wrote:1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?
I assume by 'you' you mean my charcters? Yes - one of them is a jeweller - I think he's the only one with any precious metals, or jewellery - but I can imagine some of my other characters would like to acquire some if they ever hadf the chance...

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?
My jeweller rarely wears what he produces - I think he has a wooden bracelet - that's about it
- but from his experience, jewellery - especially made from gold/silver and with diamonds - is very much a symbol of wealth - or, if given as a present - one which shows that someone else is prepared to devote time to making something with no (programmed - it has symbolic use) use value.
Other jewellery - silver/gold earrings (don;t need an nickel), copper, wooden, and bone - these items are approached in very much the same way jewellery is generally seen in the real world - as a fashion accessory (not that Cantr really has any 'fashion' trends to speak of - there's not enough variety, and they require too much time and effort to be easily discarded and 'outdated')

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?)
I don't form visual images of characters - or of places - or anything in Cantr.
I must also admit, that, I very rarely take any notice of the items of clothing, weapons, tools etc. listed in the character description - despite at least two of my characters being very concious of what they wear and wanting to get the right things to wear...

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?
Like I said - I very rarely take into account what a character is wearing - I should - I think the 'RP value only' items are some of the best things in Cantr - I just find that I forget to look - and as I don;t work on visual imagery - they aren't useful for me unless used IG - which, unfortunately - they are rarely reffered to...

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).
Depends on my character - one content character may be different from another - I'd probably say gold - as 'wanting for nothing' in Cantr would probably mean that they have spare iron...

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?
No - I have never used the summaries...

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?
Again - depends on the character :)
My first K-Isle lady is still lokking for the right woman - hasn't found her as yet...
Then again, it wouldn't go anywhere as, just because of my own choice rather than that of my characters - I don't get involved in anything 'romantic' (read: sexual)

On another note - and I'm not picking on you here Sav - this is just a point I make regularly about Cantr, (it has its own thread somewhere...)
Savanik wrote:1) Nope. Then again, most my characters are male, so...
so... what?
Men wear jewellery - in 'real life'. But, anyway, my point is always this - why bring real life gender stereotypes into Cantr?

1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?

No.. none of mine have really had a reason for it... one has a copper ring but that was given to her by her husband and the most any of mine have. A couple have some bone jewelry they made out of boredom or to give as tokens of friendship.

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?

My chars have different goals when it comes to clothing. Some don't care beyond maybe a hide something-or-other and some have really nice clothes. Others just don't care at all. One char has all leather clothing because it makes her feel powerful (she's worked hard for it all too). Another has the leather clothing because it's what was given to her; she still likes it though. One wears all silk and it suits her personality and goals in life. Cotton suits another one of my chars better and she's got half of what she wants, but still has to finish trading for the rest of it.. if she ever cares about the rest of it lol

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?)

Pretty much don't form images in my mind... sometimes what one is wearing will catch my attention and I'll try to picture it, but mostly I don't pay attention or if I do, it doesn't bring any images to mind.

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?

They don't really, unless the person wearing said jewelry mentions it, i.e. "Look at the beautiful ring my significant other gave me!"

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).

Definitely the iron. I can't think any that would prefer the gold... Perhaps in certain situations maybe one or two of them would take the gold.

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?

I have some of my summaries pertaining to specific events. I mean to send them, but they run so slowly when I open the email that it's a pain to search them.

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?

Depends on the character. I'm assuming this to mean as friendship or relationships. Most aren't involved and none of mine look to be involved; it just happens. Same with friendships, some just tend to make friends more easily or find chars that make it easy for them to become good friends with.

1. Yes, because he collects jewelry from victims.

2. It makes him feel important.

3. They don't remember clothing

4. All but one ignores it, he tries to kill them

5. Gold if nickel was also available.

6. No

7. similair goals attract my character, misspelling and stupidity are turn offs.

If those of you who are interested could answer the following questions:

1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?

-Rarely, and in most cases, to present to somebody else as a show of kinship, closeness, or intimacy. Though it entirely depends on the situation. In most cases, the characters that don't need these items end up with them, whereas the ones who could use them, don't.

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?

-It makes them feel appropiately dressed, and in some cases, a little posh, too.

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?)

-I usually just remember the characters based on how they're described in roleplay, or how they act, to whom I can relate to something/someone else in stereotype. A certain item of clothing, or lack thereof, can hold significance in how I remember them.

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?

-A superficial compliment, if they're being friendly, otherwise, acknowledgement and maybe an inner envy.

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).

-Depends on what they needed, like Sho was getting at. I mean, getting hypothetical on us really isn't fair.

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?

No, I think my characters should remember as much as I do. On very seldom occasions, if the roleplay is outstanding or the event memorable or necessary for reference, especially in the case of the retelling of oral history, my character will make a log. I believe in the rule called the capital rule where characters should not use notes OOCly for guide.

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?

This is a tough one.

Usually someone who is bold, daring, and active; but not in the ridiculous sense where they're just doing dumb things at random. They also should have an adequate spelling or grammar ability, or else I will become quickly peeved. A quick turn off would be someone intent on butting heads with me, usually through overbearing desires to power, control, etc., and of course, poorly written posts and those player related qualities.

1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?
Nope.

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?
Nothing special.

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?)
I don't form images.

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?
He doesn't act anormal.

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).
500g of iron. They always crave for iron!

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?
I still have all of them from since i started in my gmail.
It's such a wondrous thing to find things when you forgot about them.

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?
? I don't get the question.

1) My characters don´t appreciate precious metals and don´t consider those materials as precious, because they live in very pristine societies where exchange exist, so they are more worried about what are they have to eat or to wear.

2)They make feel important, that could be an achievement in their lives, but not only the use of jewelry but also of clothes, (everybody goes naked in the place where my characters live). Even if jewelry is not made from precious metals, a bone bracelet or earrings could be enough for them.

3)I always look for the clothings of the characters with my characters interact, since that I can at least imagine how do they look and maybe behave, you know "first look is all that counts".

4)My characters don´t know and didn´t kenw before another one wearings things like that.

5)500 g of iron, because it would be more useful. Usefullness is the primary attribute for my characters.

6)I don´t use that...

7)My characters are all female, and considering the kind of societies in what they behave, I think that the most attractive aspect could be the strength of a man...

Hey! You made me think a lot! English isn´t my mother tongue so... I feel tired with this :) But I found this questionary very interesting byebye

1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?
Only one of my characters, who is obsessed with clothing & style.

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?
Referring to that one, like a godess. There are a couple of others where it is significant regarding their marriage, other than that, not at all.

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments (sic) of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?)
Only the clothes-whore character.

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?
The clothes-whore gets excited and wants to know where they got the jewelry, the others don't really notice that kind of thing.

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).
Gold for the clothes hound, iron for all the others except the philantropist. He would give either away to "someone who needs it more".

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?
I started to at first, but then I wanted to keep the realism of characters easily remembering very important things and naturally forgetting other things, the way I do in real life. So no, I don't save them anymore. If my characters need to remember things years later, they write things down in notes, or ask other characters that do remember.

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?
Depends on the character I'm playing. With others' characters, some are played well and very active, so there's an attraction there. In another case, one of my characters was attracted to a man because he was a great provider for the town and very compassionate. Several others of my characters will never have an interest in any relationship outside of purely platonic.
A big turn-off is having someone else's character attracted to one of mine when they barely know my character. Physical attraction is an obscure aspect of this game, nebulous at best, so knowing another character takes precedence. Otherwise, the other character just appears to be pathetically desperate and eager to get together with another. Or the player is mostly interested in creating that third character, "the beast with two backs".

1) Have you ever expressly sought jewelry made from precious metal? If so, why?
Two of my characters have and do, One for his/her own means, they know it's attractive to certain people, another to trade. The others haven't as yet but one is going to in the future because it may give them more status with the jewellery wearers.

2) How does wearing jewelry or clothes make your character feel?
The ones who care... a female, it makes her feel special, male, it makes him feel that others may see him as more important.

3) Do your characters try to incorporate the accutraments of other characters into your mental images of these characters, or do you pretty much form your own images without bothering to reference their clothing? (Or do you not form images at all?) I always try and remember which characters wear what, mainly becasue it affects the way they feel about themselves and affects how my characters will interact with them. I always form images, I do it when reading too.

4) How do your characters react to others that are wearing precious metaled jewelry?
The ones that care... They are a little more careful of them, they don't have more experience with jewellery wearers and don't know how to treat them, one is attached to a jewellery wearer and treats them like thay are a special person and quite delicate. (They are delicate but that's besides the point)

5) If you were offered 500g of gold, or 500g of iron, which would your character take, assuming that your character wanted for nothing? (i.e. was generally content with is life situation, and had no needs left unfilled).

Depends which character... Three would take the gold, most would take the iron. The iron has more uses but gold is harder to find.

6) Do you save your emailed turn summaries? If so, do you use them?
I save them in a file, I use them now and again but not often. I'm saving them for future use, if I need to recollect something that my charrie should have easily done.

7) What, in your opinion, is the aspect that would attract your character most to another character? What is your biggest turn-off?

Difficult to answer without typing different answers for differnt characters, they are all very individual.

Probably friendliness and honesty but one character is a bit of a user and doesn't give a clue about it (No I wouldn't tell anyone who and I'm sorry I would never admit to playing them because of the possibility of ruining their social status) they are attracted to people who have things so they can try and use them to get things themselves, for instance, they would be kind to someone who is a giving person because they might get something, if someone was nice to them who didn't have anything they would probably ignore them. My biggest turn off for most of my characters would be selfishness.
