A rant and again I say ,a rant!

Postby thingnumber2 » Tue Sep 06, 2005 5:38 pm

Today I will be ranting on something that bothers me to no end!

This has probably been touched on, and perhaps threaded before, but I shall do it again anyway so tough.

Why are their so many of the same characters out there? I swear I've met the EXACT same character with the EXACT same goals and the EXACT same personality a million times. This person lives in town, talks only about trading, and sits there farming forever. No major cataclysm could ever move them from their spot, no person could ever persuade them to change their lifestyle. They all talk about the same things, wait for male/female to enter town, at which point they will woo said person until they get married (something which I still don't understand in the context of cantr) or at least hook up in some way, and then they spend the rest of their lives collecting until they can build some "blah blah and so and sos hide away cottage" need I go on?

Am I crazy or is this true?

I thought you were just going to write something annoying, but I agree wholeheartedly.

Hooking up in Cantr makes no sense, unless it's for bussiness.

Hell people, their pieces of code, they don't and can't have sex, and even if they could, it would be without a point!

It annoys me too.

If it were just some mindless farmbots/woodchoppers who marry some random doofus who can't really even rp just for the heck of it - like there was this chick in Brunoi who was "searching for a husband", I mean get a life. But anyway I think you described several types of character, not just one - the playing to get a virtual relationship type, the all about trade type and the mindless collector.

But somehow I feel this topic is totally against growing emotional bonds between characters, at least Schme was turning it as such, marking them all as unnatural and bunching all characters to want such thing in a single group with the doofuses I mentioned above. In that case I send a lovable screw you :) and you're just jealous because your characters have no mental depth whatsoever.

Naturally people would want their own house when the outside world is full of kids who can't even spell, and endless loads of "you see a man in his twenties whispering to a woman in her twenties" and reply to that, and if you are planning to add on to it then ain't it better for all you get a room? So need for privacy and escape from the crowd might not be such a terrible OOC aspect after all. If we start splitting hairs, everything in Cantr deprives from real life eventually. So there is no right way to play it, if all your characters were adventurous traders then it would be as wrong.

I agree with Seko and add, I've had a character marry, but it was purly for diplomatic reasons.

The purpose of Cantr is not too get turned on. There is alot more too the game than that. I don't like it when people do that and then make up an excuse.

No jealousy here. If I wanted, sure, I could "Get married" on the internet and all that shit. But I don't want too. I think it's stupid, personally.

But all this crap, people running around "I'm gonna get married!" Well it's a godamn society simulator. If I remember right, this place in perticular doesn't even have the concept of marriage, so what is that supposed to mean?

Anyway, you do what you want. I very much doubt that I will (or could) change you mind.

And no, I don't think this topic is against that, SekoETC. Just me.

I was just waiting for someone to think that was the right thing to say...

How can Cantr be a society simulator without the singlemost important factor in society? Without children, there is no basis for society. The aim of the whole of the human race, and of all the animals on the planet, is to survive and reproduce.

So if Cantr is a 'godamn society simulator' why don't we have the one thing that breeds society? There is absolutely no basis for society in the Cantr system, unless players make one. So, quite simply, stop hiding behind that tired, idiotic old phrase that is trundled out everytime to cover a lack of understanding.

Cantr is not, cannot be, a society simulator. Not unless you allow for ooc influences...

(NOTE: I do agree that there are far too many similar characters though... at least do something interesting with your chars people... )

What I hate is not only when they have the same goal but the same name as someone else. Imean the same full name. First and last.

Surly, you can think whatever you like about societies and what they are and are not. But you don't define what they are and are not, and you certainly can't define the game for others. It was made as a society simulator, that's what the creator and owner says it is, and there's not much you can do about it.

Would you prefer I call it an "Attempted society simulator"? Fine, whatever.

It's an attempted society simulator.

I would go into all the definition of society stuff, but that's a whole other discussion.

Without love, Society would be full of nothing but traders and angry, sexually frustrated totalitarian hitler clones (Not that i'm saying hitler never got laid.. Eva Braun was a hottie!) and would only ever be a "Attempted society simulator". A world without love and relationships would be Friggin boring! As to the example about the person moaning about finding a husband, well, that exists in real life, singles bars and personal ads would go out of buisness without people like that! I believe that finding love, and companionship is an essential part of the human.. um.. Quest for life, and frankly, Cantr wouldent be the same without the option of falling in love and marriage.

Okay, fair do's, no one is actually asking you to fall in love with a charector IRl, i mean, come on, that would be stupid, and i'm sure anyone with any married couples (I have many) will tell you that theres a hell of alot more too it than locking yourself in a house and having "E-sex" (Something which i personally try to avoid unless completly necassary.)

I admit that the "Man and woman in thier twenties" Whispering incessantly in thier corners gets a little annoying at times, but what you need to remember is that twenty is the starting age in the game, these carectors are trying to set themselves up in life, and most of all, thier having fun with members of the opposite sex, just like people in thiers twenties do IRL (I hope, otherwise life must get Hella boring when you leave your teens.) If these charectors spawned and said "Hi, my names "Blank" and my aims are to live my life attempting to end up ruling this town, making no friends or lovers on the way" Then i for one, would laugh... and then probally be really mean to them...

Bassicaly, what i'm trying to say is that, Love and coupling, is an essential part of life, both IG and IRL, and without it, Cantr would be more than likely to degrade into either a "Hack 'n' Slash" or some kinda dull trading game, which i would have no time for.

Give love (And peace) a chance!

hope that made sense....

I agree that to many people out there have the same personalities..I for one try to be sure and define each of my charries to have a different personality...With different goals..but the people they meet tend to influence some changes...One I started out as a theif, wound up being a town sweetie...another that I was going to do this with (during the major lag time) But with everyone having so much trouble logging in..she got boring...so her goal was to die...after meeting up with a quite interesting man...her plans changed....and she is happily 'married' although, it was just vows of commitment between two..not religeous or preformed..it is refered to as marraige none the less...and she is now happy with her life...sharing not only his business, but his hopes and dreams...

Connection between two is necessary, even if it is just a friendship...it is only natural for lives to bond in one way or another...some are loners...and they are also necessary in a society...as are the friends and lovers...life needs variety or it will become stale and boring...and no longer a society.

I just wish that after reading some of the articles and threads posted on this forum that I could start fresh with a load of 15 new characters.

I'll admit that most of my characters are the same, basically. I've tried to incorporate things that have happened to them to make them bitter/happier/more apathetic, but they're all the same stock character. Aside from my last four, they were all made during my opening stages of the game. Yeah, I could kill them all off, but that's a waste.

As for getting married... I've found that marriage ceremonies closely resemble those IRL. If anyone was in Drojf for the recent festival, you'll know what I'm saying. I don't have a problem with love or marriage IG, but at least differ it a little from RL!

I think that when children are implemented, love, or at least sex, will be more important.

My first IC marriages were cheap ripoffs of RL... but the more recent ones have been little more than exchanged vows. One couple exchanged rings... but only because his diamond ring was the only valuable thing he had.

I have also married 4 couples (as a celebrant) and I try to keep the ceremonies logical and totally IG... generally little more than witnessing an exchange of vows.

To address your original rant, thing, what you are complaining about: many chars who are all but indistinguishable, quietly working, looking for a spouse, making a comfortable home, not doing anything particularly spectacular with their lives. Dude, this is what 90% of people IRL do with their lives if they are lucky enough to live in a place where they aren't simply stuggling to stay alive. I find this totally realistic. They probably have dreams and interests your chars will never know about. RP doesn't have to be all in everybodys face all the time. Some chars are more private.

A lot of players create the full 15 chars but quickly find that they can't manage 15 super active, chatty, adventurous chars. Who has that kind of time? So we have certain chars who are just quiet average Janes and Joes who try to find a little happiness. I think thats sweet.

And a tad boring.

Obviously they all won't be chatty, because one: people often don't have time to do that, and two: that would be sort of falling into the category thing was talking about. People can be quiet, but yet have completely different goals, and when they speak, assuming they speak, it should be in a different manner than your other quiet characters.
Just because you're older, smarter, stronger, more talented... doesn't mean you're BETTER.
