"Cantr City" in the Webzine

Postby Genevieve » Thu Aug 25, 2005 1:47 am

It is amazing to me that after all this time the story of the Cantr City Massacre still makes me feel like crying, touches me deeply. I had two characters in Cantr City--neither were murdered, but one saw almost everything that happened. It is interesting, what was included in that story. Some perspectives I have never heard before. One missing was that of Christina...James? She gave a note to Samantha Riania before she too was killed. Since Sam was my character, I remember it. This note is why Samantha declined Pier's offer.

Anyway, anyone have stories to add, perspectives that weren't included in that story? I know this is a rehash--maybe not even interesting to most people. However for me, even after all this time, it means a lot. Haha. And they say Cantr isn't addicting??? It is events like this one that make me come back again and again.

Christina Sicilia James stood outside during the entire thing and made sure to copy all the words and actions of the entire incident. I do not, however, have any other personal notes or narratives written by her exept for these Day Reports.

She was one person that responded to the tragedy by handing out shields, making new ones, directing people to the Inn for food, offerring her personal home as a rufuge for the weak and injured, and sending someone to Brinks Forest to ask Robert for healing foods. A new Spawn named Kahina volunteered to make the trip and seek help.

Here is a letter from Rebecca Schaffer, one of Piers' employees that lived in Cantr City. I used some of the info in my story, but did not include the actual letter because it seems much of the letter is speculation after the fact and not actual eye-witness accounts as it happened:

Piers Anthony and his men from Alenz Hills have taken over the town. They've probably killed the majority of the established citizens - William Delano, who ran the inn, Katie Mlee, who ran GM Company, Christina Sicilia James - heck, pretty much anyone there who wouldn't outright swear loyalty to them.

They're chasing me now, and I'm out of healing foods. This is a long road. I'm probably going to die before I reach Vrayllnuets Hills (south). I want a record of what happened.

There was a dispute between Katie Mlee and Julian Edmonson over a key. For some reason Julian seemed to feel that the best way to resolve the dispute was to have his employee Gustav Graves shoot everyone in the city with a crossbow. Gustav was dragged into a locked building, but then released. I'm not sure why they didn't kill him at this point.

Piers made me go to Alenz Hills for my own safety, even though I wanted to stay and help resolve the situation.

Word kept coming back from Cantr City to Alenz Hills. Gustav was still shooting people, and then retreating into his own locked building. Piers decided that it fell to him to "fix" the situation. He took a few men with him to Cantr City, saying that he was going to drag all the wounded people into his van and try to shoot the criminals, then come right back. Again, I was instructed to stay behind for my own safety.

I didn't feel unsafe at this point, but Piers was my employer, so I did what I was told. I wish I hadn't.

A few days later word started coming back that Piers and his men had just shot everyone in the city without regard to whether they were involved in any trouble or not.

A few days after that, Piers himself came back, and declared that William Delano was conspiring with the criminals - had let them go in exchange for a promise of personal safety - and that a new government would be formed for Cantr City, to prevent this sort of thing from happening at the time, and that he had killed a number of people in the city to keep them from becoming involved with the criminals.

A few people nominated themselves as leaders of the town. Piers claimed he didn't want to be involved in Cantr City, he wanted to be involved in Alenz Hills - but then dropped a note specifying the form of government Cantr City would have, including a requirement that I be part of the government, which he had not so much as asked me about beforehand. I objected to this, both on a philosophical level (Piers Anthony has never resided in Cantr City, and at that point had claimed to not want to be involved in the government there, and so I felt he had no right to dictate what the government of Cantr City should be) and on a personal one (I felt he had no right to declare that I would sit on the government wihtout consulting me). We exchanged words. He started demanding a greater and greater role for himself in the Cantr City government. Eventually he declared me a traitor to Cantr City and banished me. I left, intending to make a new life for myself working in Brinks Forest for DoUrden Estates or the Krame Company, since I was friends with the leaders of both of those groups.

He decided that I couldn't be allowed to do that, after I stated the simple fact that I was not a traitor to Cantr City, that I had fought often on its behalf, that I would have been there helping to deal with the criminals had Piers not taken me away, but I was accepting my banishment because Piers headed a large enough armed force to kill anyone they pleased... a day or so after I left, they appeared on the road in their van and started hitting me.

At this point, I'm on the road between Vrayllnuets Hills (south) and Cantr City, heading towards Vrayllnuets. I just ate the last of my healing foods. There's only one person chasing me, but I've got a long, long walk ahead of me...and they've got the van. I don't expect to see Vrayllnuets Hills (south). I hope someone finds this note, and knows the truth, that Piers Anthony is a liar and a hypocrite and no friend to anyone but himself.

Cantr City had been a free place, where as long as a person didn't cause trouble, they could do as they pleased, and troublemakers were generally dealt with in due course by the consensus of the people. Many businesses thrived. I fear it will become a dictatorship, where anyone going against Piers Anthony will be killed out of hand: just what the refugees from Lad had said it was there.

We were proud to not be like Lad. It saddens me that I need to use the word "were" - but I think even if Alenz Hills is removed from the picture, the glory that was Cantr City has dimmed forever.

By my hand: 676-2, the truth as I know and remember it.
