Vehicles Wiki

Postby olaf » Sat Aug 06, 2005 10:12 am

My character is trying to streamline his trading business by getting a bike/tandem bike/rickshaw/bike cart built.

Basically he needs the ability to carry more than the 15000g, plus preferably a bit of speed for reduced time overheads.

Now, not many people around, including the contractors who will be doing the manufacturing, seem to know too much about the specifics of the capabilities of what they will be building... i.e. Whether they can drive on a sand path, or how much they can carry and how fast they can go.

Now, this seems to be a good example of why the "find out in game rule change" is a good thing - how would people who are able to manufacture something realistically have no idea what terrain it could travel on or how much it could hold?

But I have a query - can't the Wiki provide a more specific gauge of these things? Ideally I'd like to see a vehicle comparison table, or a thing saying this holds more than this which holds more than that.

Because at the moment it seems pretty confusing - a tandem bike can carry two people but has a "very low" carryon capacity, whereas a bike cart can carry a single passenger with a "very high" carryon capacity. My character is assuming that a bike cart is best for his purposes, but as a person is 60000g, maybe a tandem bike will actually allow him more storage, albeit it ever so slightly slower...

Sorry, I don't have the knowledge to change the wiki to make it less confusing, so I thought I'd run it by you all...

Yeah, that was Anthony for some reason deciding that his opinion as RD chair superceded Jos' regarding the FOIG rule change.
He didn't feel that we should know the specifics. Personally, I think Jos and the rest of the Game Administration have made it clear the FOIG rule has been removed.

I'm not sure how accurate the vehicle wiki is anyway. I had seen in game that some vehicles could not travel on paths and needed sand roads, however, the wiki seems to believe that all bikes of any type could drive on paths.

Those "very low" things are subjective too. I have a dinghy in game, and was expecting it to only hold about one person and maybe 20 kilos, and it holds a good deal more. I'd even asked about how much it could hold in game from a different character that had one, and was surprised.
Reality was never my strong point.

Maybe it's a normal sized dighy and Cantrians really are small people...

Or maybe it refers to when there are 2 people on the boat.

Ok, but this sounds pretty serious then... if my charrie ends up building a bike cart and it can't go on a sand path, but I got him to build one "coz the wiki told me so" then both my charrie and I will be royally pissed.

Wrong information is worse than none at all!

Please can anybody who is in the know help on the wiki side of things - my charrie's going to start building soon...

Anthony is the one who posted the info, and he is in the know. He says that the information is culled from the database, so it should in theory be sacrosanct. I do remember though that a bike cart could not travel on paths, but perhaps that has been changed? Anyway, hopefully someone with more authority will clear this up.

Some of the numbers are wrong as well. Like bikes requiring 700g of iron.

It may be possible that the information is wrong.

It may be possible that the information has CHANGED (Ie: A Bike Cart may not, at a certian time, been able to go down some roads, but that could have changed between then and now.)

It may be possible that, Nick, you're too whiny for your own good.

The "Find Out In Game" rule was lifted to allow players to learn about the game. Not the internals and calculations, you don't need to know that to play.

As for how much the vehicle can carry, such things as "very low", "low", etc, I've explained this. Those written values are based on if the vehicles has THE MAX AMOUNT OF PASSENGERS. So, if a vehicle carries 1 person, and has very low capacity, it will carry one person and probably less than 7500 grams more. If a vehicle carries 2 people, and has very low capacity, it will probably carry around 62500 grams (Yes, five digits.) as a Cantarian weighs 60000, as described on the Wiki. So, if you DON'T have FULL passengers in a vehicle, you merely add an extra 60000 grams of additional weight for each passenger you don't have.

I've described all that on the description of carrying weights. Is it hard to understand?

Ok, thank you Anthony for confirming that my charrie will be able to use the vehicle the wiki says he should be able to...

...seems a little odd though... logically I'd expect a bike cart to be best for my purposes, but it really sounds like a tandem bike is more versatile, being able to carry either 60000+ resources or a person... so why would anybody build a bike cart then? Maybe it can carry a _lot_ more than that, but I have no idea until I actually build it...

I'm not expecting specifics, it's just that to those of us without the exact figures, some of this seems a little uncertain, and looking at it from the point of view of people who actually are building these things, even if they'd never built one before, they'd have an excellent idea of how much it could carry comfortably, etc, even before they actually build it.

It's why people design things - they have requirements and they design something to meet those requirements, not just randomly build something and then see what it's good for...

...us knowing things fairly specifically is a way of being able to make that more like real life.

what i also dont understand is the speed of vehicles

it says a bike can has speed 13 or something and a car 30-50

and a walking person only 1.

Does this mean a bike goes 13 times faster? In my experience it doesnt.

And what is the effect of roads on travelling speed?
Does a road have a different effect on each type of vehicle?
for example a bike can go 25% of its max speed on a sand road while a car goes 50% on the same road?

Maybe it refers to how many "notches" after 100? A person can walk 100, a bike can go 113, cars 130-150.
Prolly not that simple...

None I wouldn't think...

The level of improvement of a road affect how fast someone can go on it, along with weight aboard and other influences, like the vehicle being used. :-) You'll always travel at "100%" but this progressive speed will be slower on a path in comparison to one on an expressway. This is my understanding from my own experience (so I could be wrong). I've asked if travelling on different levels of roads by foot have the same thing hold true, but I've never been given a clear- cut answer.

People build bike carts because they are as stupid and ignorant as I was. :(

That's the bottom line.

Vehicles are horribly horribly unbalanced. When I built a bike cart, it needed a separate lock (180 grams more iron), couldn't drive on some roads (apparently now fixed), and didn't carry enough extra weight to justify any possible saving. A tandem didn't need a separate lock, could travel on any road and could then carry 15,000 grams extra. Apart from a tandem, a dirt bike is a good deal because of speed, and after that a passenger car. That's about it.

By the way, if a tandem with only one person on it can truly carry 60,000 grams extra, then that's the first I've heard of it.

A bike cart can carry 35,000 extra grams, after your character boards it.
A bike can carry 15,000 extra grams, after your character boards it.
A tandembike can carry 77,000 extra grams, after your character boards it. Another character on the tandem will lower that to 17,000 grams carryon weight between the two characters.

Now you know. ;)
