"Find out in game" rule change

During the past few days, the GAC has decided on a significant change of policy. Our game administration has often been blamed of too much secrecy, and we want to change this a bit. There will be made a clear distinction between real in-character things (like personal histories or maps) and things that are more about game mechanics. The former will still be very secret and should be found out in game; the latter can be openly discussed and will not be secret anymore.

There have been many complaints about lack of documentation. A main reason for this lack is that 1) no staff had enough time to write this documentation; 2) the game is changing too fast to keep up. For this reason, I have opened a Wiki (if you don't know what a Wiki is, have a look at this explanation). This means that all players can help us writing the documentation and keeping it up to date. The Wiki can be found here:

http://www.cantr.net/wiki

You can explain game rules, game mechanics, tips and tricks (e.g. read notes), warnings for newbies about what to do when you spawn, etc. Everything related to resources (how long does it take to manufacture ...? how do I make a ...?) can be openly discussed, except for where certain resources can be found (that would be describing maps). As a rule-of-thumb you should simply never mention any character or location name.

Try to keep the Wiki a bit organised and properly spelled etc. But that should be simple, as anyone can assist in that / correct it.

It will be a lot of work if you want to describe all machines, resources, manufacturable things, etc. in the Wiki. I intend to program as soon as possible (next week?) a system that allows you to browse through that information automatically, inside the game. So the very technical information - what resources are there, what they used for, how long does it take to dig them, what machines produce what - will be made available soon enough. So you are allowed to add that to the Wiki, but you might want to wait, especially since it can become outdated. For more special items - locks, vehicles, seals, storages, etc. - all those things that have functionality that is not common among 'objects' in general, you might want to describe them.

But I would also expect to see a new interface guide, explanation of buttons, introduction to the combat system, etc. I will add an overview of skills at some point.

Have fun! :)

I will soon add a link to the Wiki to the front page, but would like to wait for you guys to give it a bit more substance first ;) ...

Thank you (both for defining what can be talked about, and providing a place to put everything)!

What about different languages in Wiki? How this problem will be solved? Like in Original Wiki (that means - every language has it own wiki) or all descriptions (in all languages) would be in the same place?

Wiki idea is great idea!

Feel free to add a link to a Polish part of the Wiki and replicate pages there in Polish ;) ... This is entirely up to the players :) ...

It did. And many people suggested it. I just stubbornly refused ;) ...

Because:

Yeah, I know. But since there are still no serious schools in Cantr, after all these years, and since there are so many complaints on this issue, I decided I was perhaps too stubborn. And considering the ease by which the GAC approved of this change, I guess I was the stumbling block all this time :) ...

You can still find many things out in game, especially histories and maps etc., which are still to be kept hidden as much as possible in OOC contexts.

? No, not really :) ... Better to post questions on the forum, wait for the answer, and add it as an article to the Wiki :) ...

Edit a page where you want to create a link to the new article. Create the link with [[ and ]], like:

[[New Page]]

And then it'll appear as a red link, meaning that the page does not exist yet. When you follow the link, you'll be shown a form to create the new page.

As simple as that! :)

I'm kinda scared that some Noob is going to abuse this as it is editable by all...

But cool, very cool :D

You can roll back changes, so it won't be too bad.
