Cantr knowledge base - in game?

Postby formerly known as hf » Sat Jun 18, 2005 10:55 am

The concept of a knowledge base has propped up again - and I'm all for it - but, to be honest, I'd like to see it developed in game, by characters. Some characters (including one of mine) have already started to do this... I'd like to see it a bit more...

Knowledge base is a good idea,

But can you be more specific HF, I also want to help OOC and IC.

Can you tell us that how a charecter can put a brick IC? I could not get the idea verywell.

Thank you!

Say, have you ever read the Hobbes Encyclopedia (1200)?

nitefyre> That's the sort of thing I was saying I'd like to see more of (I can think of another good example...). And more characters suggesting that newspawns read things like that...

I'm all for IC encycolpaedias and the like, but it doesn't really seem appropriate to have interface related things in any IC notes, so an OOC knowledge base would be useful too, including things like "In order to speak to someone privately without others overhearing, click on their name and then on the speach bubble button."

Yeah but then it would be stupid, trying to remember what you know from which encyclopedia. That's why an OOC knowledge base is needed. I always lose track of which character knows how to smelt iron or whatever, and it's not like it would be any easier to relate that character to their local encyclopedia, and which ones contain the data for what.

Hey, I like in-game knowledge bases. Anyone progressing through those?

From what I know in-game knowledge bases tended to stop being worked on when the Find out in game rule was changed and the OOC Wiki introduced

I wish more people would contribute to the few Universities out there.... Knowledge of historic figures, events, or even a common knowledge of different groups in certain regions is seriously lacking in game.

I'd have to agree there with you whole heartedly and even if there are still strong groups going they are losing their atmosphere once strong and entertainly interesting. It seems that most characters are so very ignorant to accept these groups and their history, and it's more a case of where can they get this and that to make whatever they are creating selfishly. Rarther then immersing the character into the game to the town or situation they are stood in and blending with the atmosphere, they are choosing to go solo and it makes the roleplay atmosphere very shallow. Where rules and laws of the land are just ignored, even if they have been there for 100 Cantr years or more, it's just ignored. Where deep history is forgotten and not even asked about a majority of the time. Where characters bring the baggage of real life into the game and expect fair for all rather then take a role where they must at somepoint listen and learn of the history and blend in. But they don't because they play it like real life instead of revelling in the makebelieve as is supposed to be in the cantr world.

Well, to play Devil's advocate, the laws are pretty much identical everywhere... all of Cantr seems to have the same mentality. "Tyrants" and "evil men" are put down crazy fast in this game (except for Andre Clancy, nobody seems to have gotten to him yet  ). So really, to blend in in Cantr, you have to not care about what history there is, because there usually isn't a lot. Some guy came in, laid out some laws, and we started obeying them... we've been farming potatoes and chillin' ever since.

So, in response to myself, I quote my favorite line in the sign-up-for-Cantr literature:

Jos wrote:...if you interact with others around you, and if you find nothing is happening, just do something!

So, in order to study history and great deeds, there has to be history and great deeds that happened, if you get my drift. If your charrie can break away from the small-town democracy norm and do something awesome, then congrats, you've made Cantr history. If you're lucky, someone else'll write it down and teach everyone about it. Or maybe you could write it down and teach everyone about it.

I've lost my train of thought at this point. *trails off and chases a butterfly*[/quote]

Damn that Andre Clancy, my character was coming to get him but then he heard from some people that the guy has annoyed so many people that he shouldn't live long anymore. So my character thought, ok, he might be dead by now, I just gotta find his ship before someone breaks in and takes his belongings. But then he gave up searching, at least for now.

Very well said El_Skwidd and MakeBeliever.
Go out and be interesting for Jos's sake!
