The result: 800 million percent better, I'm starting to make friends in some very developed cities (And some not so developed, but were at least under control), and my new characters got off to very good starts. They got jobs, one found an abandoned farming project (like 90% done, hadn't been worked on in days) and got 2 kilos of potatoes in the first hour. While another is a simple tradesman about to work for a wood collecting/trading corparation with hopes of owning his own company. It appears things have gotten better or my luck is improving, but these have been better times then for the much longer time I used to play.
My most successful first character had a job in a factory for the majority of his life, working on cars and chatting it up with the other workers. This was all fine and good, but the bad outwayed the positive back then, and it appears it won't happen this time
