Deterioration/repair rates

Postby Surly » Wed May 25, 2005 4:25 pm

Not really sure if this belongs in GS, GD, or suggestions... I'm sure someone can decide for me.

Anyway, I have noticed that the repair rates for iron and steel are higher than for other objects. Now I don't have a problem with that per se... but hasn't everything deteriorated the same amount? I would have thought that it should take the same amount of time to repair a new iron shield as an often used longbow, as they have deteriorated the same amount. Instead, it is much harder to repair a new iron object that an often used wooden one.

I would accept that the rate to repair an often used iron shield would be much higher than an often used longbow, because it has deteriorated for a longer time. However, I would have thought the rates should be consistent for how long it has decayed... and iron and steel lasts much longer.

I hope that it is clear what I am saying...

Anyway is this really the case, or is it a bug?

Moved.... No bug here

It depends on the rates that we set. Since metal is harder to work with then metal objects will take longer to repair.

We may tweak these in the future as continue to play around with the rates. Remember the very first rates.

Thanks for clearing that up, RKL.

Even so, my point stands. Do you understand what I was saying?

Yes, I do but wood and some other items deteriorate at much quicker speeds. We are allowed to put in only one rate of repair. So if we made metal and wood about the same then your wood will fall apart much to quick if at the repair rate of metal or if metal was at the repair rate of wood then metal would be far to easy to repair.

So you see there isn't any way for us to put a different rate at different conditions of objects. It is quite simple, metal deteriorates slower thus repair is slower. Wood deteriorates quickly thus wood repair is quicker.

Ok... I understand that wood deteriorates quicker. But when you say only one rate of repair, is that for every tool, or for each group of tools? Is the repair speed based on a formula directly linked to the rate of deterioration for the tool in question? Is that what you mean? If so, I understand.

I just don't quite understand the states of deterioration (i.e. used, new etc.) if they are not linked to the need for repair; a new iron shield actually needs more repair than an often used longbow. I was always under the impression that a new item would take, say, a day to repair, used a few days... but iron and steel stay in the new category longer. I guess that is not how it works?

EDIT: After more thought, I understand what you say. Nevermind... I would prefer it if it were different, but we are all bound by the limits of the programming... (not an attack on the PrD.)

Now look, I'm getting really tired of all these flames at ProgD... we're just trying to make a fun game for you all and if you criticize us why don't you join staff yourself you know-it-all and we're all only volunteers and if you donate money so we can all buy nice BMW's you can expect us to listen to you but untill then just shut up and...

Ehmm.. that didn't sound like an attack to me. Just sounded like reasoning after more thought. Programming has it's limits, no matter who is doing it. I think Surly was just stating that fact.
