But did your character think it was stupid? When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter what you think as a player. It matters what the character thinks. I never determine my character actions or thoughts by what I think. If I did I wouldn't have characters like General Sester Gartaf of the Alexian Empire or Zak DoUrden of DoUrden Estates and a few others that I'm not going to mention at this time  . I will put down on the boards what I think later distanting myself from my characters but what happens with my characters in game never has to do with what I am as a person. Just like your characters are seperate and distinct so to I believe is the player. Plus, I think Cantr would get rather boring if every person put only their personality into all of their 15 characters. :D

but it's sooooo hard....I find it very difficult to make my chars do completely different things than I would do in RL...like viewpoints and stuff...

Then don't think like the way you would. Think the way your character does. Don't think in terms of what you would do in the situation but of what your character would do in the situation.

It's easier though if you develop a split personality.

Your chracters don't have to all do different things. They can all have the same general beliefs and want to see the same things happen. These beliefs can by your own. It is just a matter of how they act on those beliefs given their surrondings and loyalties or lack thereof to other chracters.

Try everything both ways. Be a town croony with one chracter and with the other have it dream of leaving the town.

Topic split. Please do refrain from discussing general stuff in the 'General Support' forum.

It is easier, more interesting, and easier to keep the capital rule, when you do play them with different general beliefs, though.

My characters' personalities get used more than my own, which has sort of led to a slight multiple personalities disorder for me.. Maybe I play too much.....Naw....

All of my charries may share my beliefs on random subjects, they are in different areas, each with a variety of activities going on....so they may share beliefs, but rarely are they reacting to simular situations at the same time, and the cantrains actions around themwill have an effect on how ther react, thus they develope individually....but they do have different personalities one is shy, one likes to take control, one is very giving of herself, one has no belongings and wants none, one want everything..... they may be quiet, loudmouth, or friendly

((I know I know ...old topic...but I got bored))

I was actually thinking about this this morning. All of my characters seem to be very similar in attitudes and motivation. I think I manage to change their accents up, vary the degrees of introversion, or give them different quirks and preferred tasks. Other than that they're all eventually become rather nice and helpful. In particular, I'm finding it incredibly hard to play a trader, for instance. One character was trying to start a business and now just works basically for free for various reasons - but mostly because I can't seem to mentally not be a socialist. Oh well, at least I have finally discovered that my integrity can actually run fairly deep on something.

I think Sunni hit this topic right on with her topic revival post.

To me, it's not easy nor usually feasible to choose who you want to play, but much more natural to allow the environment to decide for you. The influences of with whom and where they live, is only a realistic, as well as a major factor in what your character should believe. That's not to say they should just become a clone of who they live with, because perhaps they hate their environment so much that that defines their actions. And of course, a character should evolve in personality through out their years.

For me, the events define personality, rather than personality defining events.

Thanks Nitefyre...then I suppose I got my point across then...if you lined my charries up side by side, there would be many simularities, but many differences also, Like I said, one is shy, basically waits to be told what to do, Another, with the same beliefs, tells others what to do and is very busy, speaks to everyone....(well not everyone) There is only one charrie that I have listed publically, and she was in my signature for a bit...don't know if anyone caught it (hehehe) She works for nothing and feeds anyone who needs food, in return, people are good to her....she also has a theory about the rose, and gives them to everyone she meets, most respond possitively, only one dropped it without a word, then left town...

It's easy to have a trader if you are smart enough to set up shop in the right place. You can't just start anywhere. You may ot think so, but your environment has a really big effect on your character. You aren't going to play a character in Lad the same way as you would in Quillinoi and expect both of them to prosper. I think I've done a pretty good job at giving my characters seperate identies. (although on bad days you may notice that my characters tempers are a hotter then usual) They have all become like real people to me and as long as you have them act like real people and not like characters in a fictional game you will see that their personalities develop by themselves without you having to designate them one.

I haven't really experienced a time when one character would do something completely foreign to me. Or say something completely against my personality. I think, like many others, I put a bit of myself into each character I create. Except maybe the potato dancing lady... No, I take that back. I speak French and she knows some French, she just doesn't know that she does.

But I did have a visceral reaction once to what one character learned while another was sleeping peacefully on a sandy beach. Has this happened to anyone else?

My potato dancing lady was getting introductions (I had just created her) and was introduced to a 'Hannah'. I had this immediate need to find out if this was the same cursed Hannah who had kidnapped my first character or not. And I thought, "Yes, but 'Tuna would never ask for more information." About two weeks later, I created another character who also met a 'Hannah' in her town. I'm pretty sure that isn't the same 'Hannah' my first character met.

I'm wondering if any of you who have been playing longer run into this phenomena. A sudden reaction like, "Oh my God! That's the pirate who stole so-and-so's ship! And I can't do anything because this character doesn't know that!"
