Government styles?

I have fifteen characters, a few in the same location, but none interacting, and only finding out names by pointing. But that isn't the point.
The point is, where your chars are spawned, what is the government like? And which of those styles do you like best.

Also, if some one were to start up a city in the middle of nowhere, with the only resources being stone and perhaps some other unedibles, but plenty of food in storage in exchange for labor, trades and/or job positions, would you move there?

I'm just wondering because two of my characters have had that idea. One, Bailey Sharadone, was going to create a city in the East Akypor Mountains, where the resources were diamonds and stone, and there were not more than 4 species of animal with about 3 or 4 of each. She figured to restrict diamond mining to up trade, and trade the diamonds for food and trowels. She'd been mining the stones to create the city itself, when she fell in love (no names mentioned ;) ) and at his urging moved on.
Another character, Kassandra Wolfe, was going to set up camp in the South Klojt Mountains, with a whole different idea. She planned to work on building the place, while making frequent runs to inhabited places for as much food as she could carry, most of which she'd drop on the ground to increase the animal population and feed starving people (and hopefully attract them to help her.) Kassi's on an iron/coal run right now, hoping to make a profit off that, perhaps enough to get herself a trowel, hopefully a vehicle in the long run, and a huge supply of food.

So, if you were to come across such a place, with a one-person government, would ~you~ settle and help build, laying claim to the highest areas of command you could get?

If my character was powerful enough to need diamonds (ie: am seeking to build a drill), depending on my character, I would most likely kill that one person government, frankly.

It would depend on which one of my characters who came there...but I think few of them would accept an single person laying claim to a whole area.

I don't think many of them would kill the person though...unless he/she started to attack my character.

Depending which character arrived there, I'd either accept a job happily, or try to take over (in a non-violent way) or propose some kind of partnership. I'd be unlikely to make a direct attack, but some of my characters might be less than honest if they spotted an easy way of getting rid of you

What Jetlag said.

I'm all for a person finding an empty or ghost town and rebuilding it and claiming yourself as leader/government. Most of my charries would applaud this effort and except it. (Just like JJ did when he was spawned on the new island with a man who called himself King so the King gave JJ the title Advisor). However if I had a greedy charrie he would go his own way and any open opportunity that would be given he would arm himself and claim the town as his. (Like King William did in Blojt Forest (south) before deciding to be King of something else ;) )

Hmmmmmmm is it a breach of the Capital Rule if you tell people how the animal system works?

Gah, the majority of cantr governments are pretty much the same. It's usually a "council" of 1 to 3 older chars in that town. And they generaly don't do too much, besides pick up ressources and put them in locked buildings, trade everynow and then (not because they need something, but because they can), or say yes and no to a few newspawns. Now that's not EVERYWHERE, but it's mainly what you see. And the only smart place in the entire game that restricts gathering of inmportant/ dangerous materials is SF.

Not the only place that restricts access to resources anymore...

In reply to the first post - I have seen many small places 'ruled' by one person. But these places are usually small, with no more than 10 or so people there at any one time. And the 'ruler' is usually just someone who happens to have spent their life there - there are rarely any more laws than the usual 'do not take stuff off the ground' 'no violence' - and they are usually very difficult to enforce.

You'll find enforcing a restriction on resource gathering very difficult without a few people to back you up... But you should really be asking the opinions of different characters in game... You never know, someone out there might like the idea and help you...

This is a very interesting question, but very hard to answer.. I PERSONALY would be happy to help, even without a title or some high ranking power.. just simply because I like building things from scratch... but it is an entirely different thing what one of my characters might do.. :) They might try to take over.. or say to help and secretly plot against the ruler.. or they might help, like I would.. But if you ask one of my characters.. they will surely have a straight answer for you :D

Blargh, Grapefruit is disgusting. Yuck. Alright, now to the post:

We could probably relate a third of the violence in cantr back to you. >.<

As Pirog mentioned, it's partially up to the character I'm playing, and partially on how badly I have the resource out of my reach. Usually, if there ain't a big armed presence, or one not equal to mine, I will simply ignore the local request, and if they start something- I'll finish it.

Now, most of my characters would not want to join a one person Government, or Business, because most of my characters are already 'made.' Considering the characters I have at the moment, one is a Law Enforcement/Peacekeeper Officer in a Regional Organization (so works for a group of Governments); another is a Guard of a town, which is part of an Empire that used to be (one of) the largest to span Cantr (works for a sizable Government); another is part of a Business which is relatively wealthy and successful, and I actually learned about one of their products via another character(relatively big business); hmm and one more is the head of a communual like town (so small Government: the permanent populace is just short of two digits, however we always have a big enough guestlist); and another is aspiring to become part of a moderately sized town's government at the moment. And the newest is of a Clan which has quite an influence (sizable Government) and the other 3 I have are sea bound explorer/traveller/part-time pirate-part-time trader. So half of my characters are involved in governments, none of those governments but the first, which is a compilation of Councils, are the Council type governments that were being ranted about earlier. There's a lot more variation than meets the eye.

The funny thing is I was thinking about starting a topic like this, but then gave up on it for some reason.

"if some one were to start up a city in the middle of nowhere, with the only resources being stone and perhaps some other unedibles, but plenty of food in storage in exchange for labor, trades and/or job positions, would you move there?"

Much depending on the character in question, what the unedible resources are (does it really have demand), if the people around are active and socially tolerable. For example a certain forest settlement is offering tools, free food and clothing but because a couple of characters have a trouble adjusting to the local leader's personality, and also annoyed by the sleepiness of the people, they are planning to leave.

"where your chars are spawned, what is the government like? And which of those styles do you like best?"

Actually none of my characters have remained in their spawn location. Often they have left before learning to know the local government, so it's hard to say an opinion about it. Most places just relay on laws posted ages ago, a few friends updating and enforcing them. There are some places worth mentioning, though I have no characters in them:

Seatown Lakeside - Has an autocrat and a few strict laws that everyone seems to be following with no problem. The society lies much on the charismatic personality of the leader. Though the location is not so organized, they can produce things that other locations cannot and thus have valuable things to trade.

Naron - I'm not sure what this leading style is called. Many people have complained on it but I wouldn't call it a slave society. Citizens receive food and clothing and are on a better living standards than the surrounding primitive societies. One of the best organized locations I've seen. (Or in this case seeing might not be the best word. ;) )

Krif Hills north - With so many people dying there was chaos and for a long time activity was reduced to a few projects but it seemed to be increasing. I'm hoping it will return to the level it was on the good old days. The clan is able to feed and offer descent clothing to far more people that there are now. There is great potential, they just need active people to fill the void. Relaying on charismatic leaders does have it's drawbacks - if such a figure goes inactive or dies, the impact is devastating. It's a shame I had the wrong type of character around, had it been with different background and better physical+mental status I could have been more helpful... Sorry!

Sjoftich - Quite a free society based on individuals working in different trades. Though without a source of food, citizens nor travellers do not need to starve here if they just ask. Though Captain Val and Xanith are charismatic, strong figures, I bet the town can survive without them. Maybe because of the guard hierarchy, there will always be someone to take care of things even if something terrible would happen. To my knowledge the leading style is influenced by Naron but in here they don't keep the reins so tight. The rate of production is not so high but at least no one has ever complained about abuse.

Out of subject.. BlackRose, that font colour is sooo pretty.

I had been wondering who plays her - seeing that's your first post on the forums explains why I couldn't find it out before.

Bailey.. Hmm, you playing Kassanda as well might bring some trouble if they start working together some day.

I doubt they'd start working together... They're too much alike, in ways that clash. They are both quite independent women (exept Bailey is now with Gahak Jordan, and Kassandra is still single), they both want to be rulers, and they both can get VERY angry and annoyed... If they did meet, they'd probably have a battle for ownership of Kassi's city if Kassandra actually does manage to get any goods off her coal trip...

I think right now Bailey will be content for a *while* following Gahak where he wishes to go, but she's a strong girl and likes to have a say in things too. ;) Heehee... And Kassandra probably couldn't adapt to Bailey's ways... It'd be interesting to see what they did if they -did- meet.... hm. Won't happen though, probably. Kassandra's secret goal is a strong fortress-like city, and I don't know what Bailey's is anymore... She wanted to be a trader that traveled everywhere, but I guess she kind of forgot about that... Heehee.

:)
