copy/paste conversation (this is just a rant)

Ok, I've seen this a few times recently...

People just copying and pasting events into notes - to explain what happened or something

I don't think it should be banned or anything

but it's LAZY

and poor RPing as far as I'm concerned...

There you go... that will be one of the few rants you will ever get from me...

A lot of us rant about this. It never seems to get anywhere.

I disagree with you on one point - I think direct pasting SHOULD be banned.

ha, let the fools who take pasted events to be fact be exploited by every intelligent character on the face on Cantr

But, I would tend towards agreeing to a ban, as that's what our character's see, but in real life you can't just past direct experience, and how the experience is presented is very important.

Yes, direct reports are lazy and ugly. People shouldn't even have time to create such a thing if they cannot bother going offline, editing the events into a story and then posting it into a note. Writing a note should take time -- it is writing.

This is a bit off topic but what if creating/copying a note was turned into a project? That would stop people from making loads of shitty copies and would put effort into stuff since editing would also require time. Hard to figure out how it would work though, if it's based on lenght then you could replace the text from the whole note or change just a few words and still the result would be the same...

And have you ever run into people who copy the stuff they or someone else say? Once there was a blatant and kinda funny case, a certain person said a thing to my character indoors, then later when we were outside he came there and whispered something to the friend of my character. I asked him what the guy had said and he repeated from word to word, it was the same thing the guy had said to my character earlier. But maybe there was too much effort rephrasing it. And I'm not mad because it was a nice thing he said, but still, do not take this as a bad habit. Unless your character is like that Arthur Stuart boy in Orson Scott Card's Alvin series (he can imitate people perfectly) do NOT use direct quotes when repeating what someone else said! Our English teacher would turn... umm, well I don't think she's in her grave yet, but seeing people cannot use reported clauses would make her shocked.

And still remembering something annoying concerning this topic: In somewhere around Siom forest there is a law that tells people to copy the line about a project finished when they want to pick up resources ending up on the ground. That's just stupid! Anyone could change the number and no one can prove who's right. Also I hate talking about projects and repeats in character because such things are technical stuff, your character doesn't go around with tweezers thinking: "Hmm, now I will pick up 10 grams of X, then wait for three hours and pick up another..."

In my opinion even bigger CRBs than using IRL quotes most people can't even allocate to one person.

Don't give away my trade secrets, Solfius.

I also hate such documents and would definately support a ban on them.

You notice the patern of how a lot of the older players hate this.

Because we know people use these little tricks to get away with things.

We also shouldn't forget about the copy and pasting of finished projects on the event page. There are a lot of players that consider that the only method of telling who owns what but little do they know that players are abusing it everyday to get away with things they wouldn't normally get away.

As a player myself, I ignore copy and paste and it has gotten some of my characters in trouble who didn't do anything as well as get some players pissed off at me because I won't do things the easy way.

Mostly I agree here. It is pretty lame to use it. Because when you tell someone what you saw, you don't say "On blah You see:' You actually would say on blah "I saw"

However, since we know that you can/can't lie using the events, as well as can/cant lie in another way, I don't see a reason for a ban.

People have given my chars notes where events were copied and pasted where my chars have/haven't believed it both. My chars then pass them on a lot of times.

They're too common, I think- to be banned. Though if it were banned and done successfully I wouldn't mind a bit. :)

I think the point is that a lot of players believe that anything copy and paste is true no matter what which is dangerous and only accept things as being true if it is something that is copy and pasted together from the events. That is especially annoying when your character is killed for theft when he didn't steal anything but picked up what he had just gathered but because he was holding too much it dropped on the ground instead and I as a player refuse to use the copy and paste method. Annoying because he was called because I refused to use the copy and paste not because they thought I had stolen the goods.

My main problem with it isn't that it is a good way to fool people...it's just because it is so unrealistic and boring from an RP perspective.

If you want to hear someones perspective of an incident the complete truth very seldom is discovered...but with these copy-and-pasters it doesn't leave room for any mistakes or loss of what could have been important information.

In Dutch there is this proverb that would translate to: "Lying as if it was printed" (meaning someone is really really lying). I guess that says it all. Players that believe notes probably believe every single web page as well.

But would you say its wrong for people to use in private diaries? If you try to write those properly - well, you wouldn't have time for real life at all!

It should definitely be banned from events pages - after all, you cant say "two seven five colon four, project finishing curing meat completed" without looking stupid. But it is a sensible way to write things down for the already time consuming game. People should just be educated (OOC) so that they realise that it isn't the only way to write things. Because believing something just because its written in that form is a CR breach...

I don't like it in any form. If your character is too busy to keep up a real diary then perhaps he shouldn't keep one at all...
