The combat skill

I would like to know if hitting someone with 0 % strength counts as a way to train your combat skill. IRL it should substitute as weapons training, so there is no logic in keeping it a secret in Cantr if it will further your skill or not.

If it is / would be so then would that mean slapping people increases your unarmed combat skill?

I should. If you train everyday with someone where you try to slap each other you will probably get a lot better at avoiding punches and hitting with your own.

Failling a response...I would suggest that hitting at 10% most likely counts as training, and it shouldn't hurt through a wood shield whatever weapon you use.

But it is irrititating when you bypass the shield and hurt the other person.
It happens...I had a character with an iron shield that took 11 % damage from a bone club.

Well yes, notice that accidents do happen in training combat. If you have read those blasted David Eddings books, remember how Sparhawk got his nose crushed by his friend? Then he crushed the friend's nose in return but did not bear grudge. At least if I would make a game then training fight could cause damage sometimes.

But then again, you should be able to make props to train with.
Only an idiot would train against a friend with a sharp blade...and might deserve to get a cut now and again if they do. But in Cantr you don't have the oppurtunity to make wooden swords to train with or target non-living things to train with bows and crossbows etc.

Maybe now would be a good idea to add in a wooden training sword or something similiar.

But that will be hard with the current system.
Making wood the only way to make a harmless replica will be unfair to people in places not close to wood. IRL you would be able to make a replica out of almost any material.
I would prefer some sort of training project when it comes to combat. To improve in other skills might be hard to figure out IRL, but to improve your combat skills it is obvious that all you have to do is train, train, train.

maybe the training benefit is ever present but increased if you hit harder. That to me makes a lot of sense.
eg.
0% : 1tp (training point)
10% : 5tp
100% 100tp
or whatever. Seems reasonable - if you train for years sparring you get good but nothing beats an actual fight for training.

I actually think it's the opposite. Sure, when it comes to actual combat experience you may have to be in the field...but for examle sword fighting I think training different techniques will give you a lot more skill than the actual chaos of combat.
From game balance purposes it wouldn't be good either. When people would find that out we would have a lot of random killings just because players would want their characters to become better.

Well, the point is that you can train as long as you like, whereas fights are rare. So you might get more benefit out of training in the end (especially for your first fight where you will probably be dead without training) but without the real experience, you will never be competent at dealing with the fear/pain/cruelty of killing etc which is vital in a combat situation.

Well, I still hope that it isn't like that in Cantr...

Now this may be a little different thing but... what if hitting with a lighter hand would increase accuracy? Since usually swinging with all your might leaves you vulnerable, you cannot stop your motion and if you swing over the enemy's head, they'll stab you in the ribs while you're still wondering what happened.
