speaking minds?!?

Postby colonel » Sun Oct 10, 2004 6:52 am

I have two characters who, unlike me, speak their minds, and although they might sometimes come off as being rude they are just being truthful and this happens in real life all of the time. Love them or hate them you have to live with it. My one character was dragged through the town and shot a few times until he was almost dead. Now he works his butt off and keeps his mouth shut in order to stay alive. The other (not to bright) is almost dead and will probably be dead next time I check, because he speaks his mind?!? I mean I know I am new to Cantr but I have always wanted to be like these characters, (Tell people what I think about them and not sugar coat it.) But it seems like Cantr characters do not like this at all and tend to kill people for it. Why is this? I mean, I know that you would like to kick the crap out of these people in real life too but I am trying something different and they die? Sorry I guess I am just ranting about it. I kinda like this character that is about to die and well I don't want to go out of character by being nice and giving in. (By the way what he has said was not even as bad as the other character.) I guess it is just the wrong place at the wrong time kind of situation.
I just want to know how these characters can still speak their minds without getting killed by others.

Sad but true. I guess another name will be added to my list. But I think this death will bring some changes to this area. Well I hope it does. It is funny but this character has touched some hearts. (Well I hope he has) I kind of feel sorry for the big lug but I don't want to change his ways like I did with the other character that really isn't living his life now anyway. I mean the guy is just a shell now and really doesn't do anything but mumble now because he is scared of being dragged around the town again. (I guess he has learned a powerful lesson in his life and that is what happens to most characters.) That is why I like this game so much, you never know what is going to happen next.

My first character has an ingrown paranoid worldview as a result of less...he was cautious to begin with (I don't like losing characters) and not far into his life he ran into one of the scariest regimes I've seen...

The result is that his life's work is a monument to justified fear of governments, and he doesn't say anything he thinks might lead to trouble unless he feels entirely in control of the situation.

In a perhaps slightly OOC manner all my characters have 'inherited' the reallization that the world is governed by what people can do, not what they should do. If someone has a sabre and you don't, think it through...chances are he can kill you at no cost, so don't make him want to.

The only reason you can get away with speaking your mind in a potentially offensive manner IRL is that there is an immense law enforcement system that threatens to crush anyone who acts on the inclination to kill and/or suppress you. In cantr...no such force exists. Newspawns hardly qualify as people untill they earn the status, and insulting people with power doesn't help toward that.

I find it very interesting with this time that there are people on his side though. The other character had the whole town against him. LOL. I think that this character doesn't really have the ability to learn something like this so quickly though and it would be out of character for him to just give in and not say anything.

There are places in cantr where you can get away with saying almost anything. And no, I don't mean places with nobody in.

I believe he (and a LOT of other people) would live if he spoke his mind in the neighboring area. He's just arguing with the wrong people. Heh.

Well I guess that is the way it has to be. He is a fun character to play though. I guess my scared and weak character that got dragged through the town will have to get some weapons and a shield and start speaking his mind again. LOL.
I must say though that I really do like playing characters like this, like I said before I am not like this and it is something I wish I could do. There are some people in real life that pull it off so beautifully and don't care what other people think. Of course they live a lonely life!

Seatown area has seemed ideal for speaking ones mind. Nobody likes it but if your character has the right kind of personality, he (or she) doesn't mind people getting mad. And living in the edge gives you the kicks, there's always the excitement wether your character has been dragged to jail the next time you check, or plain killed. But you know who I'm talking about has an amazing luck. One day I must start taking bets how long he'll survive. This far nobody has gotten physical.

There's two kinds of people to speak their minds.
1) The righteous people that feel bad about stuff and say it out loud but mean not to offend and if somebody gets pissed off, they apologize and/or fall silent for a while.

2) The rude ones that know the power of words and use them as a sword. With this type you must be very careful and be sure to learn to be tricky. The truth hurts more than any invented insult.

Well I guess it is back to the old drawing board for this kind of character for me. It ticks me off that this character has to be added to the list below. He kind of grew on me.
Don't worry though, another character that talks his mind will be back someday.

Colonel, I congratulate you. With a single illiterate character who'd been hit on the head with a stone hammer one too many times, you may have just started something immense. *shuts up now because of 4dayrule*
