Newbie Intro

Just wanted to say hi and...even get some newbie tips. =P So that I know what I'm doing before I start pushing green buttons. :wink:

Hi, and welcome to Cantr!

If you happen to use IE, you will get a hovering explanation of the buttons, when you let your mouse pointer rest on them for a while.
However, Cantr is meant to encourage its players to experiment. You might get attacked for some actions that your new characters take, but that's not at all desastrous in Cantr.

The main advice might be to realize, that it is quite common to sometimes lose a character. That doesn't mean that you played badly. It might even mean, that you played good.

On many locations, there will also be mature players who are willing to help you out a little in exploring the user interface. It might look complicated, but I think, after a day or two, you are pretty much used to it.

However, if you have more questions, feel free to post them, and they will be answered. Maybe your thread will even make it as a good start for a newb guide, that was sometimes asked for. :)

One more hint: When your character is travelling, there is a button that makes him turn around. It's easy to figure out which button that is.

Before your character goes travelling, you should definitely make sure that your character has some food on him, as travelling usually takes several days (one Cantr day equals one real time day).

If your character by chance just travelled along a road by chance, I suggest, you make him turn around, go back to the location he left and ask for food. Someone might be kind enough to hand you some. Your character might also want to farm for some food himself. Make sure that this is not violating local laws, though.

Edible foods are for example potatoes, carrots, asparagus, as opposed to tomatoes or mushrooms, that are healing foods and don't serve as daily and automatically consumed food.

Additionally, you might have noticed, that you are surrounded by many 'people in their twenties'. These descriptions are links, and you can click on them. THis will take you to a detailed page for that particular character. If you click on the smiley face button, you may enter a name/description for that character, that only your character will see. Examples for names/descriptions:
- Berry Sissom
- Old man
- Guy who attacked me on 534/6
- Kind man who gave me food
- Racine Tolladue, Blacksmith of Fjeedro
- ...

The limit is your imagination. ;)

There's a 200 minute limit per day which is easy to forget about becuase you probally won't hit it for a long time.

If you leave Cantr idle for a long time while doing something else. Logout first then log back in. It will save you minutes on the few days you may want all 200.

Hmm...food.... that explains the complaints about my guy being hungry... So many people in their 20's... too confusing! So many walk by...hit each other...poke each other...talk to each other...slaughter each other...eat each other...

<Ok...the last two I made up>>

Pok Southern Mountians Path System, travelling from Pok to Pok Southern Mountains (west)

^^ Thats what I'm doing. Is there a way to stop travelling? Or are you always moving?

And...I've looked through the things. My actions seem pretty limited.

You can turn around or press ahead.

If you took a copy of a map you can tell where food is.

I don't think it's too OOC of you to realize there was food where you came from. It takes 50 days to starve I guess so no rush. There are some issues with getting weaker and weaker.

There may be people walking on the trail. They can't give you food while on a trail. But at least you can complain about being hungry to someone.

Ya...just found out you can't do anything while travelling. Too bad I didn't know the food thing before I started moving.

That's o.k., for the longest when I was on the road I'd say, Do you want to trade, or if you have food I'll trade you for it, or if you have an extra weapon I'll help you, took me a little while to realize you can't do to much on the road :D I learn new new stuff about this game continualy, that's why I like it.

When your in a location the objects bar will show you a list of what's on the ground. Some are note. Some notes are maps. Some maps even are marked maps.

Once you pick it up there's a copy button.

One of the few things you can do on a trail is write notes.
Write a blank note then copy it.
At least that's something to do. :)

And while I'm checking the boards.... will it ever change from "A Man in his twenties", etc? Is it after being around them so long that they get a name?

To give someone a name, click that orange text and then the icon that is a smiley face. Now name them whatever you want or whatever they say there name is.
