Annoyingly Long Journeys

Postby EddyEdworthy » Mon Aug 23, 2004 4:28 pm

:o Don't you hate it when a character is unable to do anything for ages because they're travelling to another town?

Take Till Lindemann for example - He set off on his travels on 912, and reached his destination by 913, which isn't bad. But then he continued to another location as the one he was in had nobody there, and he has been travelling ever since!!!

It can be annoying, but there are a number of reasons that it has to be that way. If your characters find long walks intolerably boring, they could look for traveling companions.

If you are getting bored out of your mind, get more characters. I usually have at least 3 not traveling at any given time.

Most of mine have travelling companions.

Get vehicles, or don't travel are other options.

Travelling can be fun with the right company.. for example it has revealed completely new side of Tyrone to Jaina. But even the best buddies will eventually fall silent if they must go on forever without stopping for projects. You run out of subjects pretty fast. Traveling alone is disasterous. In the not so popular language areas the distances should be shortened, since it's far too boring even without having to use days on the road.

i have a character who's been on the same road since 912 and she's still less than half way done... and she's on a bike. :D
it's just something you have to accept since it's necessary for the game.
plus there are always other characters to tend to.

Sometimes my traveling characters are the only ones that has events happen for the whole day!
a day without cantr, is a day spent in bed convulsing and suffering from withdrawl

I would like to see a grid system with a lot more locations, but in the current system I think the long journeys are good.

I think that journeys should be segmented, so that someone can't just be traveling with no resourses but a couple days of food and have someone just hop on the road to trade... Wait, it would be like telegraphs. Yay, telegraphs!

Uh, two things you probably don't know...if you're staning on a road, you can't give things to people, and you can only interact at all with people within a limited distance of you. This distance is much shorter than most roads.

I LOVE long roads, as odd as that sounds. I have one of my characters who's making maps wandering around, and on a particularly long road, he got an idea.

...

No, I'm not going to tell you. It's a secret.
Reality was never my strong point.
