RP:ing a physically different character

My newest charrie happens to be blind as a bat, but I don't want to underline it since it would seem.. cheap somehow. So I have to write all kinds of subtle and not so subtle hints so that people would notice it without bigger fuss. She recognizes people by their sound since she's too shy to approach a complete stranger and say: "Excuse me but could I touch your face so that I'd learn to know you?" Not even real life blind people do that. Ok, it happens in real life too that if a blind person was walking around without the white stick, not many people would pay much attention to him.
Actually I have another character too that is physically different, but not so greatly as this new one. I'm talking about Yvonne. Her hair is almost white for some reason and sometimes she's over stressed about it though other's don't pay much attention to it. It would seem über-clumsy to write: "You see a young woman with nearly white hair." every time someone new enters town or when she enters a new area. That's why it would be good if there were character descriptions.
