What to do/have you done with rich characters?

I'd like to hear some ideas/stories about what people have done with their rich characters, and I also have a rich character I have no idea what to do with. I'm looking for a little inspiration.
Falling asleep, getting stolen from, and giving things away aren't really what I'm trying to discuss here by the way. :P
Anyone?

Does funding other people's corporations/etc count? Or hiring worker? That's actually nice way to help newspawns pbut not giving stuff away for free.

It honestly depends on what you want to do. Cantr wealth is really only helpful when there's a goal behind it. Often it can be a burden.

I've had characters with access to more than 1000 days of wealth (easy to do when your characters have played over 2 years), and this is what I've done with them:

* Turned their back on all of it to go "rough it". Doesn't care for wealth.
* Carry on their town's tradition of being a reliable trade port.
* Setup a new economy, turning the town from your standard "barter commune" to center of commerce. However, communal members were "grandfathered in" and remained communal.
* Got rich off of scavenging large swaths of coastline. Used it to buy a nice boat. Rigged said nice boat. Sailed around the world, going to plenty of places I'll probably never see again with any other character. Tried to go to another such place, but ended up getting killed and having it all taken from him before he could see the islands he was going to.
* Got rich off of scavenging his way across a large area. Setup a business selling nice clothing for cheap.
* Got rich doing a small amount of scavenging in towns that had been ravaged by piracy. Now runs a trading business that tends to make rather large trades with towns.
* Sits on their butt most of the time, lays around a lot. Gives a lot of stuff away.
* Bought a van and plans to make drinks and potions and the like, travel around, sell it.
* Setup a new town in the middle of nowhere with his lover, and built a quiet little town with quite a few things. Trying like hell to motivate the newspawns.
* Turned their back on all the wealth.. gave it up to go work on roads.
* Babysits said wealth and trades with the youngin's who come by. Usually gives them amazing deals.
* Turned his town into a new kind of town after inheriting it all. Trying to right some wrongs done by previous rulers.

All the rest of my characters are kind of poor... despite age in some cases, simply because the culture of their towns encourages giving the wealth to the leader.

My character (or character's town, rather) was absolutely filthy rich, because the previous town leader had been fairly stingy with trading. She liked to give stuff away and trade things at a cheaper rate, but when she started to realise that people whom she regarded as friends were using her for her wealth, she started getting bitter. She eventually killed herself.

1. Was going to create a retirement community, a town with no rules and just people hanging out. Decided it was still too much like being a town leader and gave up that idea.

2. Planning to unlock/unkey all vehicles and give them away along with a goody bag full of tools: chisel, screwdriver, crowbar, extra iron, steel, and wood, a nice weapon, iron shield, and food, etc. In progress, but not happening yet. Wants to make sure real noobies get them, and not scam artists or other hoarders.

3. Continuing to build a hoard, cause it feels good and why the hell not?

4. Once in a while, when encountering travelers, decides to run a vacation rental place. Was fun for those few days, may do it again.

5. Repairing everything, building storage for items and tools, and building machinery.

6. Thought about funding other people's ventures. Decided to just sit, watch, and wait.

7. Thought about entrusting entire wealth to one town or another and then retiring. Thought about it for a long time, including the political ramifications, relations with town leaders, local power structures, and people coming in to help move out wealth. Decided again to just sit, watch, and wait.

8. Thought about suiciding and burying the dragon's hoard. Still thinking about it.

9. Using the wealth to try out new game mechanics, machinery, and RD items that I, the player, normally wouldn't have the chance to try out. Don't really do this too much.

10. Mostly living a hermit's life, dusting things off, and repairing items. This is my favorite option.

If you're rich it means you're not doing it right. Spend that money!

Nah, spending is boring. Philanthropy comes with its own set of problems.

I've thought about this before irl. The issue of funding, grants, etc. To me, it's a boondoggle. I need to think more about it.

I think that this is the right answer. Find a way to get yourself the best luxury items money can buy, then get even richer by using the rest of your money to make more money in different and new business ventures. Keep going and build an economy while staying filthy rich!

It doesn't have to be philanthropy, just spend it all on yourself... build outrageous things, like a church full of display cases with golden items.

I can literally think of a hundred different things to build, and with custom descriptions and all this cool furniture, bookcases, displays... you can build something like a public building in a big town and it will be there forever. People will always go to look at it even long after you quit.

In the dutch zone you have a lot of really cute businesses and public buildings, but that was pre-descriptions so it looks a little naked now. There's a furniture museum that's over ten RL years old, for example. In general the Dutch name their buildings much better, often in a sort of Golden Age in Amsterdam kind of style.

I agree and that's exactly why I'm asking. :D I don't know what to spend it on. Ideally the character wants to invest in a business or something that will make the money work for -them-, but I'm getting a creative block on what sort of business to create.

Being a town leader isn't really enjoyable to me so I avoid playing that role. I much prefer awesome new ideas that bring in new elements to an economy or culture that don't tie a character down to being responsible for.. a bunch of other people and keeping them all happy from a political standpoint.

For businesses just pick a random object from the build menu, open a shop with a display case and throw it full of stuffed animals/eating utensils/fans/dice and decide on a properly themed name. There's people out there already doing this. There's more than a few stuffed animal shops.

RD is working on a portable display case, so travelling traders will have more options to display their wares.

That's not what I like to do though. Don't much believe in spending wealth on myself or my characters. Or building things to last. Ozymandias, you know. My character and I are both philanthropy-minded. So, social ramifications and influence are what I like to think about.

Wiro, you want my wealth? You can go ahead and build your stuff. I'd have funded an architect, and that would make me happy.

In the past I had one just give things away. She only had one car and gave it to a friend a town over because why would she leave her town and rely on someone else with all her shit?

Right now I have one very rich, who dumped a good bit of her stuff in random town she'd liked, in a building so she could travel faster and gave town members keys in case they wanted something out of it. She took the rest with her, and is selfishly building up a wardrobe. All that she does is to further her wardrobe and drinking needs. She'll treat others once in awhile too. She also likes to rub in her richness.

Hire people to build/gather/cook/sew all of the things your character would never have the time to do on their own.

use wealth for founding nan organization.
get into politics (I mean empire funding not just the town ur in)
round up some willing souls and colonize a distant land
build more interesting and extravagant things
create a service of some kind for people
