Telescopes are good ^_^ A lot of fuss to make but I can see why. It feels very odd having a character on a big ship without one, since of my last batch the only ship was inherited alongside its former owner's telescope.
edit: I guess in theory any character with a ship could eventually make one, but all those metals would take ages to hunt down :O

I've gotten lucky on mine. For some reason a lot of towns seem to have a few hundred grams of zinc lying around they have absolutely no use for. And that's the only one that would have been a pain for mine to get.

One of my chars has to literally cross an ocean to get clay for a kiln (as far as the character knows

I'd really like to make a telescope for my sailor, but she doesn't often have the patience to stay in one place and actually earn the materials, and I don't think she's likely to find them on her own...
My "tailor" character would really like to design some jewelry, but has no way of getting the gems she wants for some of her prettier ideas.
