I just found out (last minute-ish) that I'm going to be away for 2 weeks, possibly more. Be nice to my characters (they all behaved really obviously just now, gettin' ready to sleep) and hopefully I won't be deleted like last year.

What exactly does setting your account on "leave" do?

Makes it so that your account isn't deleted. If you don't put it on leave then the database will delete your account after a week of inactivity. Putting it on leave gives you like three months instead of one before it deletes your account. If you are going to be gone longer than three months then you should contact Programming or something so they can do something special for you.
