Ship Cabins - Question

I know they increase the amount of storage space on a ship, but does that also apply to the number of people it can hold?

...I feel dumb just asking this, but I've never had a character get much into sailing before.

Yes. Its's like in building. Each room has its own limit of people inside

Cabins, cargo holds and (less known) docked boats and ships increase the maximum cargo load on a ship. All three (and the main ship itself) work like any building would: each can hold X grams/X people. So, yes.

Note that no matter where on the ship a resource or person is, they still slow down the ship. Sailing is probably one of the few things that are actually a lot slower when done with others. A large crew can easily slow a fully rigged raker down to a third of its speed.

Okay, thanks. Just wasn't sure if the passenger number on the wiki was a hard number or if it was theoretically possible to cram even more people onboard.

And I wasn't aware of the speed change. Is that at all realistic? And do docked ships effect it the same way?

Yes, it should, and that includes people on docked ships. It's the one drawback to the raker, that it's got a tough weight effect. If you've a very large crew, you're better off with a galleon.

Technically you can have an infinite amount of things and people aboard a ship, because you can simply keep docking ships. That really surprised me when I found out. If I'm not mistaken, a docked ship by itself adds no weight to the main ship (if it does, it's negligible). I'm still waiting for someone to make a floating city.

The speed change isn't realistic. I'm not sure why it's that way, possibly for balance reasons (# of pirates, loot) and to encourage use of slower, bigger ships like galleons.

I would totally make one, if my sailor didn't have a distrust of letting anyone close to her.

Don't like your sleepy leader? Just steal the whole city out from under them.

I've got a character just crazy enough to try and attempt building something like that some day...

The thing with a floating city is though, even with the largest ship, you can't dock ships that can have cabins to it. Meaning if someone wanted a house in the floating city, it would have to be a sloop or something, docked by rowing boats or dingys, which would be the only way to achieve privacy for whatever reason, or for when you really just want to avoid the chatter. It also doesn't make for a lot of room. xD But I do love the idea.
If the skimmer or galleon is so big, wouldn't a soarer be able to dock to one, since it's essentially the smallest ship docking to the biggest?
